Objective:Prescription of invigorating Qi and nourishing Yin (PIYNY) is a formula in treatingfunctional constipation for old people based on more than 10 years experience. It couldrelieve constipation by increasing fluid and moistening intestine. This project observed 53cases which fit the standards of functional and senile constipation in Department of anusand intestine, Nanjing municipal hospital of Chinese medicine. The patients were treatedwith PIYNY from October, 2006 to March 2007, and the following indexes were tested:including improvement of constipation, adjustment of intestinal bacteria flora, NO in theserum, sub group of T cell, immunity globulin, blood lipid and sugar. The objective is toreveal the mechanism of invigorating Qi, nourishing Yin, moistening intestine and relivingconstipation. This project is important to improve living quality and prolong life of oldpeople, and provide basis for clinical application.Method:This project includes three parts: literature, clinical and experimental studies. Theliterature studies elaborate current treatment progress of functional constipation in oldpeople in both Western medicine and Chinese medicine. Clinical research is observedmainly from the curative effect; 3 weeks of treatment of PIYNY were observed to evaluatetherapeutic effects. Experimental studies observed the local and whole influence of PIYNYfrom intestinal bacteria flora, NO in the serum, sub group of T cell, immunity globulin, blood lipid and sugar.Results:1. Literature research studied the pathogenesis, diagnosis and treatment of functionalconstipation in old people.2. Clinical observation: 26 cases were treated with herbs and 27 cases with westernmedicine. Clinical symptoms were analyzed statistically, and the results showed PIYNYcould significantly improve constipation with deficiency of Qi and Yin, no significantdifference in awareness of defecation and medical effect with western medicine, butimproved other symptoms. There are no significant difference in duration of defecation between two groups, but significant in other symptoms, especially frequency of defecation.Herbs are better than western medicine.3. Experimental indexes showed that PIYNY could decrease potential pathogenicbacteria: enteric bacilli, enterococcus, yeast, increase bifidobacterium and lactobacillus, thedysbacteriosis could be improved by PIYNY. Compared with western medicine, theimprovement is better.
