Objective: To systematize the records about the Umbilical Moxibustion Therapy in ancient and modern literatures, to systematize the characteristics of the therapy in different times, to systematize the specific operational processes of all kinds of moxibustion therapies, to summarize the characteristics in clinical application and to supply references for clinical application. Methods: With the method of TCM philology, distinguishing the academic chapter and examining the mirror source and course, to summarize the characteristics in the historical development of the Umbilical Moxibustion Therapy. Connected with statistical method, to analyze and conclude the practical characteristics in ancient and modern times. Through comparative analysis, to search the differences between the ancient and modern times, and to analyze the reasons. Conclusion: The Umbilical Moxibustion Therapy stemmed from the Jin and Tang Dynasty, developed in the Song and Yuan, and declined in the Qing. After the establishment of New China especially the reform and opening-up, with the rise of the external therapy of TCM, the Umbilical Moxibustion Therapy has gained more new glories. The development and changes of the therapy are closely related to the transition of ages and academic thoughts of doctors. There have evident differences between the ancient and modern times in usages, diseases and syndromes as well as the drugs. It suggests that we inherit the ancient moxibustion therapies. Meanwhile, we should pay more attention to the excavation and reference of the lost moxibustion therapies so as to serve for clinic. Prospect: Connecting the good moxibustion therapies with modern new technologies and methods, to develop new moxibustion therapies and dosage forms which are convenient for clinic.
