Research Aims:Previous explanations of Dang Gui Si Ni Decoction are limited to some combined interpretations of the Song and Gui texts. This paper seeks complete the much needed work of digging deeper to heighten understanding of the formula as well as its clinical applications. The aims of this paper are:Revolving around the ideas of Formula-Disease-Person, to delineate the laws governing Dang Gui Si Ni Tang, so as to facilitate its use in clinical practice. To expound on the unique characteristics of the people of the Guangdong and Guangxi region, and hence improving the constitutions of this group of people.Research Methods:This paper uses recent and more ancient sources for research purposes, in particular comparing the Song and Gui texts, as well as referencing other important texts like Shen Nong Ben Cao Jing Ji Zhu, Ben Jing Shu Zheng, Zhang Zhong Jing 50 Wei Yao Zheng and Zhong Yi Shi Da Lei Fang, so as to deepen analysis and comprehension of Dang Gui Si Ni Tang. This paper also integrates Huang Di Nei Jing and Shang Han Za Bin Lun, as well as Professor Huang Huang’s own insights on different constitutional patterns. It also takes recent and ancient case studies into account, as well as the author’s own experience in his clinic. The results is an understanding of how to use Dang Gui Si Ni Decoction in the treatment of people from the Guangdong and Guangxi region.Main Content:Preface:Includes the background to the research, reason for the research, significance of the research, present state of research in this area, summary of the research sources. An overview of recent discussion involving Dang Gui Si Ni Decoction. Research on the core theories relating to Dang Gui Si Ni Decoction: This encompasses materials from the Song and Gui texts, making note of the different ways the herbs in the formula is used as well as differing opinions on Shao-Yin versus Jue-Yin as well as "extreme cold" "versus" "counterflow cold" of the hands and feet. Research on the Formula-Pattern usage of Dang Gui Si Ni Decoction: This paper expounds on the depth of herb-pattern theory, then compares the use of herbs in both the Song and Gui versions of Dang Gui Si Ni Decoction. It compares the use of Gui Zhi versus Rou Gui, as well as the use of Mu Tong versus Tong Cao. It also discusses whether the original formula contained Fu Zi, and the topic on dosages. This paper also discusses and analysis issues relating to the Formula-Pattern framework, pathogenesis, disease associations as well as differential diagnosis with regard to the Formula-Pattern framework. It also goes through and analyses past Chinese physicians’ case studies, including those of the ancient past, recent past as well as the author’s own experience. The future use of Dang Gui Si Ni Decoction:This discusses the climate in the Guangdong and Guangxi region, dietary content, working environment as well as lifestyle habits which have changed the constitution of the people, causing the delinking of Yin-Yang Qi, hence suggesting that a majority of the people possess the pattern of blockage or exhaustion of Yang Qi. It continues to cover how the formula has inspired physicians during the Warm Diseases era. Finally, it uniquely proposes the theory of Unblocking Yin-Yang Qi, which may have immense clinical therapeutic value and inspire the treatment of diseases in the twenty-first century.Research Outcome:Dang Gui Si Ni Decoction’s Formula-Pattern Pathogenesis:Ying-Wei Imbalance, Qi Deficiency Blood Stasis, Blood Deficieny Cold Congealing. Dang Gui Si Ni Decoction’s Functions:Balance Ying-Wei, Unblock Yang to Transform Stasis, Warm and Tonify to Disperse Cold. Classical Indications:Hands and feet counterflow cold, pulse fine and receding. Accompanying symptoms:Frequent cold in the upper abdomen, lower abdomen or lower back. Unique constitutional characteristics:Complexion:bluish-black or pale, without shine, not swollen, usually dryTemperature of four limbs:cold, especially in the extremities, often accompanied by numbness, cold-pain, dull red or even bluish-black. Aggravated by cold, to the extent that the finger and toe nails, lips, face and auricles turn white or ashen.Body pains:headache, toothache, chest ache, backache, joint pains, menstrual cramps for women (usually stabbing pain, wringing pain, dragging pain) Pulse:weak and fine or fine and wiry, usually moderate in speed or even slow.Tongue:tongue is often pale red or dull red, even with ecchymosis. Tongue coat is usually thin white or white and greasy. Associated Diseases.Research Conclusions:The human body appears Unblcoking Yin-Yang Qi to form many slow venereal disease. Although the climate of South of the Five Ridges is hot and wet, many people in south of the Five Ridges have long term diet cold and long time.Work under air conditioning. Lead Yangqi barrier or losses in various factors, Unblcoking Yin-Yang Qi resulting in many chronic diseases. Dang Gui Si Ni Decoction is widely used in the area of South of the Five Ridges. According to the times changing factor, the constitution of the south of the Five Ridges people’s constitution changes, and the Unblcoking Yin-Yang Qi. Therefore, the use of Dang Gui Si Ni Decoction can effectively treat the category of chronic disease.Dang Gui Si Ni Decoction’s Formula-Pattern research is inspirational to later scholars is the following three aspects:a. Although the disease spectrum is increasing with the times, the symptoms of the human body are almost the same as that of the ancient times. So remember Shang Han Za Bin Lun provisions to seize the characteristic symptoms and the use of prescription are of great help.b. Zhang Zhongjing in addition to pay attention to the differentiation of pathogenesis outside, the same attention to the thinking of prescriptions, for scholars on prescription provides at least two sets of ideas.c. First to suggestion the idea of Unblcoking Yin-Yang Qi, as it will guide my own research and understanding of other formulas as they are used in the clinic.
