Consumptive Disease in TCM contains a large variety of diseases ranging from ancient times. Modern medicine thinks that some chronic and consumptive and metabolic disease can be included within Consumptive Disease, such as chronic fatigue syndrome, chronic renal failure, post-cancer, diabetes and its complications. Therefore some unexplained or refractory diseases, which regard the loss of organs, and blood virtual failure of yin and yang as the main pathogenesis, can be attributed to the scope of Consumptive Disease. The early records related to Consumptive Disease can be traced back to the Huang di’s Internal Classics period. The descriptions about the Xu, Sun, Lao in the book created an opportunity of Consumptive Disease. Zhang Zhongjing discussed the Consumption as a disease for the first time in Jin Kui Yao Lue. He discussed Consumptive Disease from the veins, syndrome, prescription, and became a model in cognizing and treating Consumptive Disease. The syndromes’ classifications taken by doctors from Sui and Tang dynasty have been the recognations’ bases of subsequent doctors. The definition of Consumptive Disease, which was the generic term of Five Lao, Six Poles and Seven Injured, was created by Chao Yuanfang in Zhu Bing Yuan Hou Lun. And he described seventy-five kinds of syndromes in Zhu Bing Yuan Hou Lun. Following Zhu Bing Yuan Hou Lun and Qian Jin Yao Fang, doctors in Song dynasty studied the medicines and prescriptions of Consumptive Disease, and classic names of syndromes deeply, such as Feng Lao, Leng Lao, Qi Lao, Re Lao and Ji Lao. At the same time, the Consumptive Disease of women and children was highly valued. Tai Ping Sheng Hui Fang, on the basis of Qian Jin Yao Fang, proposed Ru Lao for the first time. You You Xin Shu proposed children special disease Gan Lao. So far, the definitions related to Consumptive Disease were basically established. Inclining doctors’thoughts were the features of recognitions in Jin and Yuan dynasty. That consumptive disease could transmit from up to down given by Liu Wansu was the most famous theory. Moreover, the Consumptive Disease book, Shi Yao Shen Shu, was published. Based on these, the recognition of Consumptive Disease given by doctors in Ming and Qing dynasty was improved guadually. For example, many espacial recognitions about etiologies, pathogenesises, symptoms and treatments came out. With the publishment of Consumptive Disease books, such as Hong Lu Dian Xue, Li Xu Yuan Jian, He Shi Xu Lao Xin Chuan, doctors discussed the disease from the pathogenesis, prescription, treatment, illness conditioning, health prevention, and made Consumptive Disease theory gradually improved. Today, the Consumptive Disease theory, which has been developing continuously, become an important diagnosis and treatment guide of major diseases.Through combing the origins of Consumptive Disease systematically, this study summarized generations of the key definitions and theories. From the view of Concept, pathogenesis, Treatment characteristics, relationships and other related diseases, this study analysed the awareness of Consumptive Disease in TCM and got the following conclusions:1. The definition of Consumptive Disease has been improved guadually in the changing. The disease with comsuption was called Consumptive Disease in the early time. And the process from Xu to Sun, and then to Lao, was taken more impotent. Consumptive Disease of traditional Chinese medicine, according to the characteristics of disease, included deficient diseases, Lao Zheng, and the deep or contagious diseases, such as Lao Zheng, Lao Zhai, Lao Zhai, Chuan Shi Lao. Now the discussion about consumptive disease often didn’t involve infectious diseases.2. The Consumptive Disease theory about etiologies, pathogenesises, symptoms and treatments has been developed guadually. The analyses of Consumptive Disease were often discussed on deficiency and excess of Zang and Fu before Song dynasty, however, the discussions about etiologies, pathogenesises, symptoms and treatments of Consumptive Disease were between the deficiency of Qi, Xue, Yin, Yang and one of internal organs. Furthermore, tonifying and warming Yang were the basic principles, and reinforcing Yin, dispelling Wind, removing Stasis, reducing Phlegm were suitable for the patients who had been sick for a long time.3. The characteristics of Consumptive Disease among modern people, found in depression unnormal living time and excessive lust, dued to a state of internal damage which was made by over thinking among comfortable people. during treatment, we should benefit and dredge, depending on the detailed disease and the actual situation.4. Consumptive Disease of traditional Chinese medicine contains extensive disease, modern variety of major disease in later period and viscera weak state. With the development of medicine, the kinds of consumptive disease were changing. Some deficient disease which was hard to be named, could be named Consumptive Disease.5. Modern people’s Consumptive Disease, leaded to bad emotion, disregular eating and living, excessive sex. This deficient condition was caused by excessive thinking of idle people, so that the treatment must tonify with moving, and recognizing the deficiency and excess. And, with the development of medicine, the disease kinds contained by Consumptive Disease have been changing.6. Health maintenance, which is very important to treatment and recuperation of Consumptive Disease, could be concluded to some principles, combining heart and psychology, body and spirit, sport and comfort, eating and preserving, treating and preserving. These should spread from adjusting mind, sport, eating, preserving and treatment.
