ObjectiveAnalyzing the similarities of characteristics between some members of "metal family" in the five elements. Analyzing the concepts and the ways of thinking of the consumptive lung disease’ name and pathogenesis.MethodFirst, this study took metal as an example that all of its members together named "metal family". Wittgenstein’s family resemblance theory was used in the analysis of members assigned to the category of "metal family", which includes autumn, west, white, pungent and lung. This study aimed to analyze the similarities of characteristics among members of "metal family" and the causes of some physiological function of lung. Second, the thesis used conceptual integration theory in cognitive linguistics to present integration process of lung flaccidity in "Synopsis of the Golden Chamber" and analyze the way of thinking and meaning behind it. Third, from the perspective of cognitive, the thesis analyzed the original meaning of consumptive lung disease’ pathogenesis, and used the conceptual metaphor theory in cognitive linguistics to explore metaphor thinking characteristics of it.ResultThe members of "metal family" have complex similarities. The concepts of consumptive lung disease’ name and pathogenesis are many-sided. Metaphorical thought (main factor) and ancient anatomy are the causes of sickness name of lung flaccidity. Lung flaccidity’ pathogenesis contains metaphorical thinking.ConclusionFirstly, members are classified into the category of "metal family" through analogical reasoning of family resemblance. Certain member in the "metal family" has similarities in different aspects with multiple members in the family. Any two members of "metal family" may not always have any similarities. Any member classified as a member of "metal family" shows similarity with at least one of other family members. Certain physiological functions of lung are not owned by the lung itself, but by the characteristics of "metal family". The range of "metal family" can be expanded. The "metal family" can build new members in different areas. Secondly, Consumptive lung disease’ name emphasizes the pathogenesis of lack of body fluid, patients’ bow stooped posture when they spit turbid saliva foam and weak state of lung. Interstitial lung disease can correspond to multiple diseases in TCM, in which lung flaccidity is most similar to it. On the basis of metaphorical thought, a variety of pulmonary diseases with same symptoms and pathogenesis are similar to lung flaccidity. For lung volume reduction with same symptoms and pathogenesis, just interstitial lung disease is similar to lung flaccidity. Thirdly, with the changes of the times, the "frigid" and "heat" appear expanding trend. They develop from the feeling of ambient temperature change, a limb or body touching objects to the body’s own. Under the "cold" or "heat" feeling, the limitation of temperature conditions expands. The ways of chills and fever as the consumptive lung disease’ pathogenesis include two aspects. On the one hand, excluding external heat or cold evil factors, they are lung flaccidity’ pathogenesis mainly for the body’s own subjective feeling or pathogenesis category of chills and fever after integrating syndrome or the result of joint action of both factors classified by TCM doctors. On the other hand, when the understanding of pathogenesis was not clear, the ancients looked for the mechanism contraction of plants in the nature and used metaphor thinking on human lung, which inferred the consumptive lung disease’ pathogenesis and shrinked mechanism of the plant being the same. According to the analysis of original meaning of "weakness" and "obstruction", they became antonyms after a historical period. As polysemy, both of them have different meanings in different contexts. Weakness is also one of the consumptive lung disease pathogenesis.
