Objective1.To determine what factors to be considered in planning a psychoeducation program to better meet the needs of Schizophrenic patients in recovery stage and their family members.2.To translate and modify the Americal three R’s course of psychoeducation for compiling the materials of a psychoeducation course for Schizophrenic patients in recovery stage in community.3.To measure the effect of course on the quality of life and self-management ability of Schizophrenic patients in recovery stage and to investigate the course evaluation.Methods1.Three focus group sessions were conducted and recorded, transcribed, and analyzed by members of the research team. The main content of focus group includes views on current psychoeducation, views on content of the new family psychoeducation program and views on the design and delivery of the education and course.2.Make the decision what will work or not based on the author’s own experiences, the condition of China, and the results of the patients focus groups.The materials of the course will then be translated and modified into a new psychoeducation course for Schizophrenic patients in recovery stage.3.This study used the randomized controlled trial design.76patients with schizophrenia in Changsha were ramdomly divided into intervention group and control group. The intervention group received the new psychoedcation course without changes in their treatment, and the control group was treated as before too.We measured the effect of course by investigating the changes of the scores of The Schizophrenia Quality of Life Scale (SQLS) and The Chronic Disease Self-management Study Measures (CDSMS) of Schizophrenic patients in recovery stage between the beginning of the course and three months after the course.At the end of the course, we invited education receivers to evaluate the course.Results1.Patients and their family members hoped to grasp the fullest possible knowledge about schizophrenia, whereas the factors influencing the efficacy of the schizophrenia health education curriculum included: discrimination, non-understanding of family members, easy to forget, unreasonable timetable.Health education was mainly in the form of classroom teaching.2.Developed psychoeducation course materials for Schizophrenic patients in recovery stage in the community.3.The scores of motivation and energy of SQLS of intervention group was higher than control group(t=3.908,P<0.01).The result of Repetitive Measure Analysis of Variance showed that the scores of motivation and energy of SQLS of intervention group was higher than control group (F=18.433,P=18.433)and there is no interaction between intervention group and control group (F=1.017, P=1.017).4.The scores of self-efficacy of CDSMS of intervention group was higher than control group and the diffirence is statistically significant (t=2.236,P=0.029;t=3.497,P=0.001).The scores of incapacitation of CDSMS of intervention group was lower than control group and the diffirence is statistically significant (t=-2.966,P=0.004).The result of Repetitive Measure Analysis of Variance showed that the scores of incapacitation of CDSMS of intervention group was lower than control group (F=6.251,P=6.251),but there is an interaction between intervention group and control group (F=7.506,P=7.506).5.The approval rate of the course is100%.Conclusions1.At present, there are a few psychiatric education courses in China; patients and their family members are eager to acquire knowledge about the contents of schizophrenia; worry about being discriminated;there is a different knowledge demand between the patients and their family members. 2.Developed psychoeducation course materials with feasibility for Schizophrenic patients in recovery stage in community. Schizophrenic patients in recovery stage agreed with the course objectives and course installation.3.The course can help the Schizophrenic patients in recovery stage to promote their power and energy.
