Nowadays,"mutual restriction between foods" has become a widespread topic in human society. It is said that some kind of foods are not proper to eat together, as it may ca. use disease, poisoning or even death. In recent10years,"mutual restriction between foods" is becoming more popular with the progress that normal people have paid more attention to food safety. As there are thousand kinds of foods associated to mutual restriction,"mutual restriction between foods" has become a great concern to rational diet. Both ordinary citizens and nutrition experts suppose that the concept of "mutual restriction between foods" originates from Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) theory, and it is really a fact that there is a similar TCM concept ca. lied "incompatible food", which is a kind of "dietetic restriction" in TCM theory. Now the problem is whether TCM really has the concept of "mutual restriction between foods", or "mutual restriction between foods" has the same meaning as "incompatible food", or whether there are any differences or relations between them? How was the concept,"incompatible food" originally defined? What TCM theory was the concept based on? And how has the concept been applied in practice? This research is based on statistica.1analysis of241TCM ancient books related to "incompatible food", and aims at finding the origination, the evolution, the content and the theoretica.1basis of "incompatible food".According to the results of statistica.1analysis, the main Elements of "incompatible food" include the combination of incompatible foods, the types of food, the adverse reaction and the condition for pathopoiesia, and each Element has the common features like huge amount of information, which is broadly sea. ttered in distribution, yet in some ca. ses, is loca. lly centralized. Each element has its own features. The content of "incompatible food" is widely spread in different literatures with a huge amount of information appeared in nonmedica.1books. The "Incompatible food" is defined according to different theories like the "yin yang and five elements", the Analogy, the special presentation of ethnic taboo, the Random Poisoning accidents, or the special taboo that is different from ordinary convention. There are a lot of different combinations in "Incompatible food" in one hand and in the other, the records show that one combination of "an Incompatible food" often leads to many different adverse reactions."Incompatible food" is likely to exist among the types of food like meat, fish, potherb and wu xin vegetables. Conditions for pathopoiesia has not been widely recorded though, the "pregnancy" is usually a common condition for pathopoiesia.By comparing the "incompatible food" with the "mutual restriction between foods", it is easy to find that they are different in many aspects such as provenance, meaning, theoretica.1basis, the quality of literature, the distribution of literature, feature of the types of food and the adverse reactions, etc. Therefore the "mutual restriction between foods" is not the same as ’incompatible food" in both concept and origination as the concept "mutual restriction between foods" did not come from TCM theory. Our research shows that the origination of "incompatible food" has multi-sources and the evolution of "incompatible food" has three features. One is the birth of new "incompatible food" is also accompanied by the inheriting of old ones. The second is that the records are generally sea. ttered, while sometimes centralized. And the last is some literature has a definite inherent relationship while most of them haven’t. Although the main content of ’Incompatible food" was developed in Ming and Qing Dynasty, the textual research shows that the concept of "incompatible food" appeared in Yuan Dynasty, and the book named ’yinshanzhengyao" is the earliest provenance up to today. The concept of "incompatible food" is derived from "incompatible medica. ments", while the content of "incompatible food" comes from "dietetic restriction". It is obvious that the three terms are different from each other in concepts, but they are also closely associated together in practice. The "incompatible food" is not only supported by TCM theory’s "Incompatible medica. ments", but also supported by another TCM concept ca. lied "not to eat miscellaneous foods" that has become an important theory to explain the ca. use of uncertain diseases or the ca. use of certain poisoning ca. ses during the days when TCM theory was still in the initial developing stage, therefore the concept "not to eat miscellaneous foods" provided the theoretica.1basis for "incompatible foods" and in return, the "incompatible foods" has become the practica.1support to the concept of "not to eat miscellaneous foods"Many phenomena of "incompatible food" are related to the philosophic concept ca. lied " induction between objects", which is a viewpoint of ancient Chinese Philosophy. It reveals the universal connection among different objects, but ca. n’t reflect the intrinsic quality of the connection, so its scientificity is quite limited.Religious taboo affects "incompatible food", especially that of Taoism. Its Religious discipline and dietary regimen restriction exerts an influence on "incompatible food" and this is why many historica.1records in "incompatible foods" were written by Taoist priest. The "incompatible food" is derived from "dietetic restriction", but has been affected by folk taboo and witchcraft:the influence of folk taboo on "incompatible food" resulted in the disagreement between the ca. use and result of the "Incompatible", or in the varieties of different reactions from the same source of "Incompatible", or even resulted in mis-recording or mis-explanations of "Incompatible foods"; the influence of witchcraft on "Incompatible food" is related to the theory "not to eat miscellaneous foods", which is influenced by witchcraft’s theory ca. lied "the life is converted in circles". With the declining of Treatment by witchcraft, the concept of "incompatible food" arose. As the content of "incompatible food" is so complica. ted, ancient doctors of TCM could not arrive at a consensus on whether it really exists, how to explain it and how to make use of it, but instead, doctors usually recorded the "incompatible foods" based on their own experiences, and have never conducted any theoretica.1discussions or systematic studies on "incompatible foods"Generally speaking, the intrinsic quality of "incompatible food" is diversified, and there are no unified objective evaluation criteria. In a way, it is rather a Cultural than medica.1restriction. Viewed as a whole, most of "incompatible food" record is non-positive, therefore "incompatible food" is a kind of restriction that is confined by many conditions.
