Research Of Old City Regeneration Design Strategy Based On Everyday Life

After reform and opening-up policy, with the development of economy, Chinese city starts to develop with a large-scale, high-speed and leap-forward type. Each city develops a competition of construction achievements in the aspects of construction area of new city and modified scale of old city. The spread of quick success, the pursue of short-term performance, the unilateral dependence of technical rationality place an excessive emphasis on high efficiency of old city regeneration, the improvement of intuitive material environment and the growth of economic numbers which land redevelopment brings. The grand construction whose aim is uprooting miscellaneous old city environment and improving the living conditions of residents in old city gradually forgets that “why they build city and whom for?”. Old city regeneration forgets the essence of life, neglects the responses of the most basic demands of everyday life in the development of city space, weakens the attention of residents’ real space experience, which causes the isolation between people and new space. Old city regeneration neither find the real life characteristics of old city, nor recover the vitality of old city, just create an isolated image project, it keeps city away from residents’ directions of daily life oppositely. Meanwhile, a series of issues such as the city destruction of original overall structure, the serious split of functional space, the lack of public space, the vanishing of regional characteristics, the space that is short of humanness are occurred because of old city regeneration which excessively depends on market mechanism for a long time, the failure of government intervention, the rapid and unordered expansion of old town center. Therefore, it is essential to re-examine the aim and method of old city regeneration by taking ordinary residents’ everyday life of old city as a starting point.This paper proposes to establish a design strategy of old city which is top-down and dealing the basic demands of everyday life directly from the perspective of “everyday life”, which offers more accurate orientation and beneficial supplement for the current old city regeneration strategy. On the one hand, it integrates the research achievement of everyday life through various disciplines such as Philosophy, Society, and researches internal logic and external motivation of space development of everyday life; on t he other hand, it analyzes principal contradiction of old city regeneration caused by the changes of residents’ daily life and confirms the main issues under the background of economic and structural transformations of domestic society.Based on synthesizing related theories and practical experience, and recognizing practical issues, we define the important factors and value orientation of old city regeneration design, formulate the aim, principle and method of the design. It makes living environment and space of the old city center more suitable for diversified demands of everyday life, drives the sustainable development of old town center by discussing how to optimize patterns of city life on a micro level, improve the system of life space on the middle level, create life space on the micro level. Finally, we apply the strategic theory in practice and demonstrate the feasibility of old city regeneration design in the perspective of everyday life by an empirical research of old city regeneration project of Liberation Road in Guangzhou City.
