The large scale construction and operation of China’s high speed railway since 2004 has brought great opportunities to spacial development. How high speed railway, as an important infrastructure, promotes the development of city clusters in our country and accomplishes new-type urbanization, is the vital realistic background against which this paper takes into account. The essay focuses on the characteristics of space-time transformation and space structure evolution that high speed railway brings to city clusters and conducts empirical reseach on the Yangtze River Delta.Adopting the basic approach of raising, analysing and solving problems, the essay scientifically puts forward a good question, namely, dicussing the effects of high speed railway from the perspective of time and distance. On the basis of summing up the relevant studies at home and abroad, this article reviews the theories about transport infrastructure development and urban space evolution from technological, economic and social viewpoints, and also the technological tools such as space-time mapping, spatial interpolation and analytical technique. On the basis of systematic examination of the transformation of high-speed traffic network in the Yangtze River Delta which includes expressway and high speed railway from the perspective of road network, mileage and separation of passenger and cargo, the essay draws a space-time map of the Delta by stages with cities as coordinate points and the help of GIS. Then, it details the evolution of the space-time map and summarize the rules of space-time city contraction in the delta. Furthermore, the article reseaches the space structure of the delta from the viewpoints of population, industry development and construction land usage. It also uses panel data to cross-check the evolution of space structure in the space-time map since 2000. In the end, the essay reviews the spatial development strategy of the delta, looks into its delta development trend and puts forward relevant suggestion. Finally, conclusions of this paper are made as follows:(1) the high-speed traffic network in the Yangtze River Delta is tridimensional and hierarchical. On the delta level, it radiates from Shanghai; on the provintial level, it varies. Jiangsu province presents the shape of grid; Zhejiang provice presents the shape of radiation. At present, the high speed railway still strengthens only the connetion between several main knots. (2) The influences that high speed railway brings to the space-time contraction in the delta are: "hierarchy+network" with flat structure, space super accessibility, compound sphere, as well as direction change, breakage and displacement. (3) As far as the evolution of space structure, the Yangtze River Delta has formed the sturcture of "sphere+axis", but with signifigcant industrial and regional difference. As for industial difference, the manufacturing indusrty diffuses with obvious homogenization. While producer services aggregate to cities along the high speed raily. As for regional difference, the two provinces take on a divergence of trends. Jiangsu province presents more axial feature, whereas vital spatial elements gather towards 2 central cities Hangzhou and Ningbo in Zhejiang province. The structure diversity is closely related to provincial city distribution, economic model and historical context of these two provinces. (4) Influenced by high speed railway, the space structure of the Yangtze River Delta will change from network to compound model. High speed railway will greatly affect regional spatial pattern. Finally, the essay raises relevant suggestion from supply side and the viewpoint of regional development:properly arrange constructing sequence of high speed railway, adjust railway operation model according to regional spatial structure and emphasize on spatial integration and coordination within 1-hour metropolitan area.
