Research Of Modern Commercial Trade Building In Guangzhou

Modern commercial trade buildings are important components of Guangzhou, a city with a typical commercial essence. To work in concert with the development goals for Guangzhou to become a international trade center and cultural center, we put it in a broad background of the development of modern commercial trade building, discuss its emergence and development process. In the absence of attention, this dissertation try to work on the excavation of rich cultural meanings under the surface of the buildings, and also try to set up some applicable principles of protection and restoration according to the characteristics of system construction, promote the protection to be holistic and scientific.To construct the research system of Guangzhou modern commercial buildings, this dissertations based on the background of Guangzhou during 1840-1949 and apply the concept of "Generalized Integral" of the Place of Cultural Significance "in the Burra Charter. All kinds of these buildings have evolved with primary and secondary order. By analyzing characteristics of the world economic development and the main industries in every period, with the help of the concept of E conomic Growth Pole and economic data, we have made sure in this essay that the dominative building types are the custom buildings in the late Qing Dynasty, the department store buildings in the early Republican period and the hotel buildings in the middle of Republican period.Helped by British architect Mr David Smith’ concept,the Six Categories of Buildings, we analyze all these three dominative building types and their evolving, put the following three buildings as typical cases:neoclassical Guangdong Custom House in the colonial era, the Da Sun (Nanfang Mansion) Co. Ltd with the style of eclecticism and Chicago School in the big consumption era, the Oi kwan Mansion with artistic styles of decoration in the hotel era.And take them as the representatives for three important historical periods of Guangzhou trade buildings between 1840 and 1949. We set up a frame system with contrastive study of cultural development and the real space to analyze Guangzhou modern commercial buildings with western architecture prototypes and similar buildings in Shanghai and then sum up the development of the overall characteristics of the Guangzhou modern commercial buildings.This dissertation is divided into six chapters. The first chapter includes the study of the background, significance, methods and content structure. In the second chapter, the related research contents are defined with anglicizing the historical changes. It provides theoretical and ideological reference for in-depth study. The 3d,4th, and the 5th chapter are on the basis of world economic development. Namely according to the era of colonial expansion, big consumption era and big hotel era, respectively discusses the period for urban prosperity and trade mark of the customs building, drive the urban culture and entertainment culture department store building, as a new era of commercial space, hotel buildings analysis their motivation and external characteristics, as well as to the blocks and the influence of the city. The sixth chapter is about the characteristics of Canton modern commercial building. In this part,I summarizes the characteristics of modern commercial building and study about protection value, the status protection and utilization etc.
