The object of study in this article is the Central Axis of modern Canton,as kind as the urban space with the range involved the Zhenhai Tower on the Yuexiu Mountain(??????),Monument to Dr.Sun yat-sen(?????),Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall(?????),the municipal hall(????),the People's Park(????),Qiyi Road(???)as kind as Weixin Road(???),Haizhu square(????)and Haizhu bridge(???).The construction of these urban spaces is closely related to the important political events in the urban history of modern Guangzhou. The urban space is defined in the official context as “the traditional urban central axis(modern times)” and is established through the relevant protection regulations and protection plans of historic conservation area. This concept have provoked academic controversies. The concept of “urban axis”,as a topic of contemporary urban space theory, has also affected the recent historical research on Guangzhou's modern urban space. The difference between the concept of “center” in the historical context and the “urban axis” today is shown through researches and explorations of relevant historical materials. This difference shows the possibility of the interpretation of urban history of modern Canton in a different perspectives of urban spatial structure cognition in the historical context. The concept of urban “center” in the historical context is likely to be influenced by the specific spatial form at that time.Historical studies on urban morphology may respond to the above-mentioned question about how urban spatial structure concepts are expressed in historical contexts. In the study of urban morphology of “Central axis of modern Canton”,there have been many achievements in the study of urban space on the northern section of the axis;while it's possible for further discussions on the southern section, including the section of Weixin Road to Haizhu Square. The historical study of urban morphology requires a large number of relevant municipal construction plans, historical records, archives, photographs, maps, urban planning drawings and other historical materials.Further research can be based on the map of land division and boundaries in Canton in the fifteenth year of Republic of China(1926)"Guangzhou Shi Jingjie Tu(??????)",the related research of historical building types based on the current situation mapping and so on.Based on these fundamental data, the study attempts to use the chronological order as a clue to develop historical narratives, and to sort out the relationship of the 3 issues: concept of “city center” in historical context, the important events of the political operations and related practices of urban decision-makers,and the formation and presentation of urban morphology. The Central axis of modern Canton is a contemporary concept. The foundation of the realistic urban space is based on a series of different and overlapping spatial sequences during the Republic of China, including such as the"Superintendent's Office-First Park(as kind as Central park and People's park)-Rongxin Road(???)"linear space in the administration period of Guilin warlord Mo Rongxing(???),Sun Ke(??)'s municipal central architectural plan with the concept of civic center, the Urban Design Committee's city plan of Honam Island(??)'s new city center, the construction of the municipal hall and Haizhu Bridge, and so on.After the founding of the People's Republic of China, with the construction of Haizhu Square and the corresponding planning plan as an opportunity, the planning concept of“Urban Axis”reconstructed the understanding of the spatial sequence of this area. The spatial sequence formed by important city memorial buildings and public spaces is often used by city policy makers of all ages through major political events. The urban space along the Weixin Road is often excluded from the ideological discourse because of its complexity and non-characteristics.
