With considerable integration from manufacturing to construction industry in China, only depending on the traditional architectural knowledge, have the architects lesscontrol to all the building process. Architectural education is exclusive from the systemof manufacturing and lack of synergies with engineering. Meanwhile, manufacturingindustries in China are facing the double stress from the systematic evaluation andshrinking market. The engineers in China have little understanding with the buildingprocess. Thus, to study the building process from the perspective of manufacturingfocuses on the relationship between the construction and manufacturing and settles onthe synergy of both.“Tectonic” and “Technic” are the replacements of the terms of“construction” and “manufacturing”, since the latters are not congruent with all thehistorical meanings. On elements, system and cases studies, the synergy of “Tectonics” and “Technics”illustrates the philosophical matter of the building process, including the main issues:What is the content of, and which elements condition the building process? How is thesystem of building process established and served for architecture? Refer to theprecedents abroad and based on the local condition, how can the construction industrypromote itself by the synergy with the manufacturing industry? The study deals withthese issues through the methodology of critical metaphysics, theory of system andhistory of technics.Part one focuses on the elements of the “Tectonics” and “Technics”: input, output, control and mechanism. With the relationship between these elements and the people–with their basic needs, added values and aesthetics. Part two establishes an architectonicframe of building process based on theory of system. The terms “physical system” and“information system” describe two subsystems: the human being to natural objects andthe exchanges of terms. Part three reviews several famous historical architectural cases,re-illustrates the building process on the perspective of synergy between “Tectonics”and “Technics” and gives reasonable reappraisal to these cases. Then with theapplication of the former methodology and based on the local condition in China, suggestions to the construction industry, architect and architectural education are to beraised for the purpose on the synergy with the manufacturing industry. Results from this study of building process include three phases: first, a theoreticalcore is established on the physical system and information system; the essence ofbuilding process is considered as an artificial value-added process to the naturalmaterials. Second, human laboring added-value in the building process is criticallyanalyzed; the architectonics reflects the synergistic ability of knowledge integration andthe core value from human being in the building process. Finally, the cross-disciplinebridge between architecture and engineering is constructed by the subject of BuildingTechnology and Science; the practical value towards the problems of the constructionquality today points to the future synergy between construction industry and themanufacturing industry.
