In recent years, with the constant improvement of economic and socialdevelopment level and the vigorous implementation of urban construction, the trend inthe complication of urban functional units and the expansion of urban scale isincreasingly significant. Consequently, a series of problems like excessiveconcentration of population and functions, traffic jam and the declining ofenvironmental quality emerge one after another. The root for generating these “urbandiseases” is the unbalanced development of diversified citizen activities and multipleurban connections. In other words, there is contradiction between urban functionalconnection needs and urban traffic supply. Therefore, many large Chinese citiespropose the policy of resolving the above contradiction through developing the urbanpublic transport dominated by rail transport. However, from the implementation effects, the countermeasure effect is not obvious by only valuing the urban traffic supply.Hence, it shall start from human activities and travel characteristics, and promote theintegrated development of urban rail transport and urban functional units, which is alsothe inevitable requirement for the sustainable development of Chinese large cities.Starting from the diversified functional unit characteristics in large cities, thisthesis combines the multi-dimensional requirements of multiple connections in urbanlife and urban sustainable development and explores the different interactionmechanisms and relationship performances of two systems from macroscopic, mesoscopic and microscopic levels through one-to-one correspondence ofdifferentiated modes of urban functional units in different scales and differentcomponents of urban rail transport systems. Moreover, it puts forwardcountermeasures to promote the harmonious development of the two. Based on thisidea, the research is carried out mainly through the following aspects:First, based on the combing of basic theories on urban functional units and urbanrail transport system as well as the interactive theories, this thesis proposes that thediverse site selections of urban functions, the multiple connection of urban life and themulti-dimensional requirements of urban development are the inevitable requirementsand internal mechanisms to promote the harmonious development of urban railtransport system and urban functional units. Furthermore, according to the differentiated manifestation patterns of functional units in large cities in various scaleslike city, corridor (axis) and district (node) as well as the components of urban railtransport systems in network, line and station perspectives, it establishes the two’sinteractive relationships and coordination focuses from the three aspects of railnetwork and urban functional structure, rail lines and corridor functional layout, aswell as rail stations and local functional units. This further provides layered andsystematic framework for the following researches.Next, from the network and urban functional structure, function layout of andalong the lines, as well as stations and regional functional units these three levels, thethesis discusses the relation features between the urban rail transport system and theurban functional units, as well as the interaction mechanism and coordinationstrategies. On the macro level, through analysis to the interactive impact between theurban functional unit mode and the urban rail transport, the thesis proposes that thefundamental solution to solve the big city problems is to vigorously carry out the “bigpartition-small integration” urban functional unit mode which based on the railtransport and oriented on the optimal system efficiency, as well as to create thejob-housing balance based on the rail network. On the mesoscopic level, throughanalysis on the impact to the function layout along the lines caused by the rail linetechnical features, and the reaction towards the rail transport caused by the functionsalong the lines, the thesis proposes the key points of harmonious development betweenthe rail corridors and the function layout along the lines. On the micro level, the thesisproposes the rail station classification method based on the urban section partition, andthe main strategy of the coupling development between the rail stations and thefunctional sites. Furthermore, on basis of this, it suggests to take the “station planningunit” as the innovative planning approach in order to promote the harmoniousdevelopment between the rail transport and the urban functional unit. Finally, takes the recent rail network and the line one subway in the main urbanarea of Tianjin as example, the thesis conducts empirical study from three levels, which are the relationship between the recent rail network and the city functionalstructure integration, the harmonious development between the rail lines and thefunctional layout along the lines, as well as the functional units optimization of the railstations and nodes. The study conducted on every level is problem-oriented. Throughthe analysis methods of time interval analysis based on the rail network, the corridoreffect based on the node unit and the station classification based on the section partition, the thesis reveals the main problems which impact the Tianjin rail transportand the urban functional units confront with in every level of harmonious development. Moreover, it proposes with relevant coordination strategies and measures based on theprevious theoretical study achievement.
