Currently, the concept of “smart cities” has already become a new trend andpractice of modern urban development. Urban pipeline networks are the lifeline of acity, the foundation upon which cities depend for survival and development. With thedevelopment of Information Technology, the construction of urban pipelinegeographic information systems has already entered a stage of networkedmanagement, whereby information resources have developed from purelyself-sufficient, closed models into merged models of many kinds of data and resources. How to utilize an already established urban pipeline GIS system, establish andistributed and expandable shared service system based on all kinds of pipelines, provide consistent and transparent sharing and service for the user, increase thedecision-making and management ability of municipal departments, and achieveharmonious symbiosis between people and cities—all of these are important issues forthe building of smart cities.Urban pipelines involve many different departments, many different kinds ofinformation, and diverse data formats. The GIS information acquisition models andprocessing technologies employed by each department are all different, causing largediscrepancies between applied service systems. Therefore, researching the keytechnology of urban pipeline spatial information sharing and service systems is animportant precondition for resolving these issues. With the support of strongtechnology, barriers between departments can be broken down, information islandscan be eliminated—all combining together into one standardized sharing serviceframework, making possible the sharing of urban pipeline spatial information, therebyproviding the foundation for building the service system of smart cities. The maingoal of this dissertation is to provide effective solutions for integration, sharing, andapplication service systems of urban pipeline spatial information. The main researchseeks to do the following:1. From the evolution of spatial information sharing system structure, analyzethe necessity of service-oriented system frameworks and build a framework for urbanpipeline spatial information sharing service that is based on SOA, open, and relativelycomplete.2. Introduce urban pipeline ontological thought and establish a model based onurban pipeline spatial information sharing in order to screen the discrepancies ofurban pipeline data.3. By analyzing in depth the current condition of urban pipeline spatial datamanagement, clarify the necessity of urban pipeline spatial data integration, proposemulti-source, heterogeneous integration methods for urban pipeline spatial data:through the integration models of metadata and spatial database servers, carry outdescription, organization, and management of the integration of multi-source,heterogeneous urban pipeline information. 4. Given the need for dynamic aggregation of service resources and theintegration of existing urban pipeline resources, propose a dynamic aggregatingmodel for urban pipeline spatial information resources, providing distributed smartcustomization, search, and acquisition services for urban pipeline spatial information, and providing virtualized support for the integration of discovered services and GISresources.5. Build a service-oriented workflow model for urban pipeline spatialinformation, which carries out organic integration between GIS and workflowtechnology; design a workflow technology system framework based on a GISnetwork system, providing an overall framework and guidance for the integration ofoperations-oriented, multi-level urban pipeline spatial information service workflowsystem.6. On the foundation of the above research, design and carry out a prototypesystem based on SOA for a urban spatial information sharing and service platform andverify the effectiveness and practicability of this dissertation’s research.Going into the future, an important area of research will be on cloud-basedconstruction and spatial information display models for urban pipeline spatialinformation sharing and service platforms.
