The family Buccinidae belongs to the gastropod order Neogastropoda within the phylum Mollusca and consists of a large number of species. Except for the genus Clea, the members of Buccinidae inhabit marine environments worldwide, from the tropical oceans to cold seas, and from the intertidal to the bathypelagic zone including cold seeps and hydrothermal vents. Most of them live on rock, coral reef or inhabit sandy and muddy substrates. Until now, systematic studies on this family are very scant. Misidentifications and systematic confusions are frequent in this group, calling for a systematic investigation. The present study deals with more than 1000 entities of buccinid specimens, which are deposited in the Marine Biology museum, Chinese Academy of Sciences(CAS). Most of the specimens were collected from several investigations including National Comprehensive Oceanographic Survey(1958-1960), the China-Vietnam Joint Oceanographic Survey in the Beibu Gulf(1959-1960, 1962), the CAS Xisha Islands Marine Biological Investigations(1975-1980), the CAS Nansha Islands Investigation(1985, 1987-2000), and the Marine Investigation of Continental Shelf of East China Sea. Besides, supplementary samplings were also conducted to obtain specimens for systematic in particular molecular studies.A total of 67 buccinid species belonging to 25 genera are evaluated and described by using morphological and molecular methods. Among these, 3 species are new to science, 4 genera and 10 species are first records in China, and 5 are unnamed species. The morphology, taxonomy, and geographical distribution of each genus and species were summarized, the Chinese name and Latin name of relevant species were checked, misidentifications, synonyms and homonyms were revised. Tabular keys to species of each genus and geographical distribution are also provided. The phylogenetic relationships of ten species belonging to nine genera were analyzed and discussed based on mitochondrial COI and 12 S r RNA gene fragments. All species studied in this paper are listed as follows: “★★”refers to new species, “★” refers to first records(either species or genus) in China.Gastropoda Cuvier, 1797 Buccinidae Rafinesque, 1815 Ancistrolepis Dall, 1895★1.
