The family Cerithiidae is a group of old and evolving slowly prosobranchs. The members of themarine snail family Cerithiidae Fleming,1822exhibit significant variation in morphology, oftenresulting in difficulty identifying individual species. And especially it is short of the informationof their ecology, physiology, reproductive biology. Most cerithiids are herbivores or detritivoresthat live in the intertidal zone or in the shallow water of tropical and subtropical seas around theworld. Many species have a planktotrophic larval stage and are therefore widely distributed. Somespecies have gregarious habit. The Cerithiidae distributed in China has not been fully studied. There is a great need an integrated systematic study in China. The study on the taxonomy and zoogeography of the Cerithiidae is based on more than1194specimens that deposited in the Marine Biological Museum, the China Academy of Sciences inQingdao (MBMCAS). The materials are collected by MBMCAS since it was established. Theinvestigations mainly are the National Comprehensive Oceanographic Survey (1958-1960), theChina-Vietnam Joint Oceanographic Survey to the Beibu Gulf (1959-1960,1962), theComprehensive Surveythe of Continental Shelf of the East China Sea, CAS Xisha Islands MarineBiological Investigation (1963-1981), and the CAS Nansha Islands Investigation(1985,1987-2000), Investigation of the Coastal Zone Biological Resources of Hainan and XishaIslands (2007-10), Investigation of Aquatic Biotic Resources in the Intertidal Zone of Beibu Gulf(2010-12) and the Marine biology Survy of Intertidal Zone in recent years. In this paper,42species belonging to two subfamilies, six genera of Cerithiidae are described,including3new recorded species from China and1new species. The morphological charactersand zoogeographical materials of all the checked species are illustrated, as well as the photos ofprotoconch, operculum and radula and keys to all genera. In China, cerithiids occur in the areas south of Zhejiang Province. Hainan and Taiwan Provincehave the most abundant resources. The cerithiids has a similar distribution in China in contrast ofthe neighbor countrys like Japan, the Philippines and Australia. This study enriched the marinebiodiversity of China, and provided the basic data for the biologe, ecology and phylogeny ofCerithiidae. All the species studied in this paper are listed as follows (for new recorded species fromChina Seas, for new species):Cerithiidae Fleming,1822Bittiinae Cossmann,1906Genus Argyropeza Melvill&Standen,19011.
