The wind behavior in western terrain is different from which in coastal area of China, ithas obvious seasonal characteristic, especially for the strong wind in western region. Thewestern region is the hilly terrain, with high mountains and steep valley, and the complexterrain has great influence on wind speed, also wind direction and spatial correlation aredisplayed marked difference. Contrasting with the engineering in general area, the limitationsof structures increased in western terrain. With the Chinese economics developing, moreattentions are paid to improve the infrastructures in western area of China, meanwhile, lackingof corresponding research data are gradually obviously. Therefore, It is essential todeterminate the features of wind blow over the western area.The work summarized in follows and conducted:(1) The inland wind and typhoon were comprehensive compared to point out thesimilarities and differences of wind characteristic. Furthermore, the inland wind environmentcharacteristics and research status were summarized, and the necessities of study on themountainous area wind environment were explained.(2) By selected three typical strong wind areas, the Alashankou, Dabancheng, Eerqisiriver valley, two years of field wind observation were carried out. Wind characteristicparameters of three typical regions were analyzed by statistical method from the wind velocitydata which obtained from the observation, then from which the wind distributioncharacteristics and laws were achieved.(3) Terrain models with appropriate scale of three typical areas were made. It is the firsttime to use the efficient ‘arranged tube’.And accomplished the wind tunnel tests withmultiple wind angles,multiple points and a variety of wind field. The distributioncharacteristics and laws of wind areas were got from test results. Whereafter, compared withthe field measured results, get the differences and laws between wind tunnel tests and thefield measurements.(4) Based on the ‘numerical wind tunnel’ simulation technology, the numerical simulation research was carried out on the condition which is the same with the condition ofwind tunnel test. also the wind profile and turbulence intensity distribution of each measuredpoint were got from numerical simulation research, Calculation results and wind tunnel testdata were compared with each other, the rules of the wind velocity and turbulence intensitychange with height were also concluded.(5) The parameters of wind in western area were got by using three main approaches forthe first time, which are including field measurement near the long span bridge, wind tunneltest on modeled terrain test and CFD technology, the advantages and disadvantages for thethree main methods were described, it can provide a reference for the study of inland strongwind. This paper is to investigate whether there is a best appropriate approach to ascertain thefeatures of wind in western area of China.
