Developing a dynamic database of fundamental geospatial information is a frontier technology for spatio-temporal data management and application. With the accelerating requirements for geospatial data update and the increasing developments of data acquisition technology, we are faced with the conflict between the explosive growth of data and insufficient management of historical data. Therefore, how to seamlessly integrate and manage spatio-temporal data becomes an important issue in China. The main objective of this research is to develop theories and methods of spatio-temporal database based on an extensive study of the spatio-temporal database modeling, managements, queries and representations, and to break through some key technologies including integration, management and dynamic visualizations of spatio-temporal data. Another research objective is to develop a spatio-temporal database management system in order to carry out applications on spatio-temporal database system. The research aims at coming up with an integrated solution to deal with, manage and represent spatio-temporal data.In order to promote technological advancement and enhance the depth of applications on fundamental geospatial information spatio-temporal database, this research concentrates on developing technologies and methods for multi-version fundamental geospatial information, including designing a common spatio-temporal data model, developing a integrated management methods, exploring dynamic visualization technologies and developing a spatio-temporal database system. The main research results include:1. Design of a spatio-temporal database model for fundamental geospatial information. Based on the analysis and comparison of existing spatio-temporal data models, this research proposes a common spatio-temporal data model-"Version-Difference" model-to dynamically manage and effectively apply fundamental geospatial information. The model includes spatio-temporal object modeling, spatio-temporal database modeling and structure systems for spatio-temporal database models2. Implementation of an integrated management technology for fundamental geospatial information. This research designs a logical composition and physical storage structure for fundamental geospatial information spatio-temporal database, In addition, the research establishes and develops a spatio-temporal index method, temporal query language and dynamical updating mechanism.3. Exploration of dynamic visualization methods for spatio-temporal data. According to theories of dynamic visual variables and computer animated technologies, this research explores and implements dynamic cartographic symbols, and achieves a variety of visual representations and dynamic simulations of spatio-temporal data. The results could promote human’s perception and cognition of spatio-temporal data and also overcome the limitation of traditional representations which are only focus on a single data state.4. Development of a spatio-temporal database system. Based on the above conceptual and technological basis, this research develops a system which could support spatio-temporal data modeling, spatio-temporal query, historical retrospect, version reconstruction, spatio-temporal integration, dynamic updating, as well as dynamic visual representations. The system achieved good results in testing and evaluation in different case studiesThis research have developed main key technologies, including spatio-temporal modeling, integrated management and dynamic visualizations of fundamental geospatial information, in order to deal with the current problems in managing fundamental geospatial information. The results have been successfully carried out in different projects and applications. The research provides a preliminary solution to assist in managing and applying fundamental geospatial information. It therefore enhances the potential to take advantage of historical data and promote the depth and breadth of fundamental geospatial information applications.
