"The Quarterly Journal of Economics" is the authority of the economic circles and the representative of domestic economics publication in The Republic of China. What it represents reflects the mainstream and characteristics of the economic thought in The Republic of China:propagating Western economic theory, simultaneously researching and following suit, and then applying to China's economic development with its national conditions. This paper will analysis systematically "The Quarterly Journal of Economics" on its founding, operating, publishing, classification of authors and content; and investigates its significance of academic and reality with the method of combining history and economics.Ancient China has no economic science. Although there are a large number of historical records on economic policy and economic activities, well documented, but never developed into a system of economic theory, this is determined by the nature of China's feudal peasant economy decision. At the late Qing Dynasty, as the intrusion of Western powers, Western advanced technologies coming into China. And then found that the mere possession of technology can not really strengthen the power, so Chinese people began to learn advanced Western theories. Western economic theory into China, thanks to the early 20th century craze for studying abroad. A large number of Chinese students went to Japan and Europe and the United States, most people chose economics. From 20s to 30s, these students had to return into the Chinese economic theory studying. They went to enter colleges and universities to teach, or serve as government officials, having become celebrities. It is precisely because the background of these students, the elite of China's modern economics was able to create and develop. At that time, because of no specialized agencies for economics studying, so these students have formed groups for exchanging academic thinking. In order to adapt to the situation, Chinese Economic Society established in 1923. The Society was composited by the Anglo-American students, and most of them were the economic elite, many people even got PhD in economics. It is precisely because of the the authority and social influence theories of Society members, making the Society became the main force of economic research institutions. "The Quarterly Journal of Economics" is the Society Journal which founded in 1930 and discontinued in 1937, including total of 29 published in eight volumes, and 333articles,158authors."The Quarterly Journal of Economics" implemented editorial responsibility, both before and after a total of two editors, each editor's remarks that the guidelines on behalf of the magazine quarterly. From 1930 to 1934, quarterly editor was Li Quanshi, he proposed policy is based on international, raise height; from 1934 to 1937, quarterly editor was Tang Qingzeng, he proposed policy is to focus on realities, learning so use. Changes in policy by the magazine can be seen, before and after the continuous refinement, from theoretical research to focus on tend to apply theory to solve practical problems. Quarterly of funds is also a multi-channel fund-raising, mainly from the fun of the Society, advertising fees and private donations. Quarterly publication will have been undertaking by the Commercial Press, the latter due to the scourge of war, the Commercial Press is damaged, then once transferred to the dawn of printing bookstores. The authors of "The Quarterly Journal of Economics" were the main members of China's Economic and Social Council, its structure has diverse characteristics, mainly by economic celebrities, business celebrities, cultural celebrities and politicians and other accessories. Most of these people are Students, with a very high level of economic theory. Most of their articles represent the forefront of the development of economics at that time, their views in the economics profession authoritative. The articles related to many areas in Economics. I will classify them as the following categories:history of economic thought, economic theory, banking and finance, labor and land economy, accounting, audit and statistical, economic policy. In which the history of economic thought and economics theory is related to the content of the theory of economics. Banking and finance, labor and land economy, accounting, auditing and statistics, economic policy belongs to the scope of Applied Economics. Theoretical Economics mainly includes scholars and the spread of Western economic theory, and China should explore the development of capitalism or socialism. Through the analysis of these articles, it can be concluded:first, the economic theories which the journal published were the forefront of modern Western economics theory, but authors just not copied them, but to its conduct in-depth study and emulate, to form our own economic theory. Second, whether developed capitalism or socialism, the journal not subject to ideological influence, but rather to take a balanced position, with China's national conditions. China takes an appropriate way on its own wish. However, due to witnessing the Western world of material prosperity and civilization advanced, so they preferred capitalism in China. The content of Applied Economics accounted for most of the space. I will divide them into seven parts:financial, fiscal, labor economy, land economy, accounting, auditing and statistics, economic development programs in crisis, controlling economic thought. With the Republic of China's economic development, it is easy to see that these are all related to an important aspect of national economic development, and are subject to the world economy. Such as the financial aspects, before and after 1930 the world economic panic, causing a large wave of floating silver price, the Western countries on the silver price gave a direct impact on the measures taken by China's silver price. Silver prices go up or down in response to the impact of the national economy, many Chinese scholars were flocking make plans with the intention of seeking a line with China's national conditions-based system. Articles referred to this reflected mainly three kinds of views as gold standard, silver-based system, and bimetallism. But these suggestions also suffered varying degrees of criticism. So after the National Government in Nanking tried through a series of attempts, the government implemented the Law on monetary policy and ultimately unified currency. This shows that the economics of the Republican period, not just stop at the theoretical level, but to the world economy and Western economic theory, coupled with China's actual situation, the three combined to sum up the most suitable program of national economic construction. The same is true on other aspects. Each policy changed, the journal would set up to explore the special issue and speak ill of current affairs. But eventually the economists vision to solve the problem, its position is more fair and more objective. In addition to economic thinking has rich content, in their style of study, there is also a lot we can learn from "The Quarterly Journal of Economics". From the above we can see that most of the texts related to Applied Economics Quarterly, showing quarterly aims to apply their knowledge to use the advanced Western scientific theory to solve China's economic problems. At the same time, there are many articles in the quarterly inter-related to academics questioned and argued, and some even related to ideological differences. And the journal supported the debates which can help the development of national economy. In short, the historic significance of study on "The Quarterly Journal of Economics" is enriching the contents of the history of Republican economic thought. And its real significance is worth of developing and referencing which includes unbiased academic position, applying what they learn and inclusive style of study, comparative analysis of research methods, and so on.
