With the development of economics education in modern China, economic discipline was paid more and more attention from all sectors of society after the founding of Republic of China. Since the promulgation of relevant statute by the government of Republic of China, kinds of universities were set up speedily here and there. Herefrom China's modern economics education began to move toward normalization and institutionalization. The Department of Economics or Business School was established one after another in kinds of universities within the period of time. Then a large number of dissertations in economics were written by the graduates of these institutions and economics education was constantly improved in China.The economics dissertations during the Republic of China period have some theoretical and practical significance in the content. They were young students'main research results, and also reflected the research extent of economic theory and the prevailing socio-economic conditions. This paper selected economics dissertations' research content as study points and conducted comprehensive and systematic analysis, and caught sight of the development process of economic thoughts during the Republic of China period in the view of young students. It will provide historical data and literature basis for fully exploring the content and theoretical contributions of economic thoughts during the Republic of China period. The paper examined the characteristics, academic contributions, historical influence and practical value of economic dissertations by means of combination of historical data and economic methods.This paper selected economics dissertations of Wuhan University during the Republic of China period as study object, which has ordinary representation. Wuhan University was a famous national university at that time. The university not only trained a large number of high-level personnel, but also left a lot of valuable resources, of which were economics dissertations. Based on the data gained from sorting out and counting these dissertations, we knew that the main research content of these dissertations were Financial, Western history of economic thoughts, agriculture, and Money and Banking. After describing the overall framework of economics education and analyzing dissertation data during the Republic of China period, we analyzed the four aspects of main research content in the second, three, four, and five chapters respectively, to dissect the economic thoughts reflected by them.The second chapter selected research content on the fiscal problems in China from the historical dissertations as analyzed object. Three theoretical issues were discussed in this chapter. They were tax reform thought, budget and bond theory, and wartime fiscal theoretical system during the Republic of China period. The aim of my research is to explore the far-reaching impact of western fiscal thought and the contribution of economics education institutions to fiscal theoretical system construction in China.The third chapter selected research content on history of Western economic thought from the historical dissertations as analyzed object. They included economic thoughts from various economic genres, such as classical school, new classical school, and Keynesian. These dissertations on economic thought genres provided data support for present study on economic thoughts. By introducing and commenting these data, I found out the theoretical characteristics and evolution path of the Western economic thought genres, the spreading extent of Western economic thought promoted by higher education in economics, and the academic influence on young students at that time.The fourth chapter selected research content on the agricultural problems in China from the historical dissertations as analyzed object. This chapter mainly discussed agricultural building and land issues during the Republic of China period. I found that at that time young students'academic research, not only limited to economic theory, but also extended to the real economic and social problems, and integrated theory with practice to think and summarize its solutions.The fifth chapter selected research content on money and banking in China from the historical dissertations as analyzed object. Specific contents included currency issue, price problem, inflation and bank building during the Republic of China period. Many economic problems at that time were still existed at present, so the problem-solving ideas and programs which were mentioned in these dissertations provided reference for us to solve current economic problems.In the last section of the paper, I made a comprehensive evaluation. Firstly, I analyzed the characteristics of economics dissertations in Wuhan University during the Republic of China period:covering wide topics and more on applied economics, closely contacting with reality, and being more influenced by western economic thoughts. Then I evaluated economics dissertations'academic contributions, including verifying the effect of western economics communication in China, providing strong historical basis for the future generations to study economic thought during the Republic of China period, and promoting the development of economic discipline in China. Finally, I analyzed the realistic enlightenment and defects of economic dissertations to achieve the purpose of an objective assessment.
