Since 1950s, the calculation method has played a pivotal role in the understanding and development of electronic vacuum devices and their corresponding high-power devices (such as the HPM). The enhanced capacity of algorithm and the continued improved function of computer have promoted the development of the simulation technology. Electromagnetic particle-in-cell (PIC) simulation is the theoretical research method developed in this context that studies the interaction of charged particles and electromagnetic field. It can be shown the images of physical movement of charged particles and electromagnetic fields directly by using the numerical integration solution on the Maxwell equation and the equation of motion of charged particles. At present, this academic research has been rapidly developed and gradually matured.For the above reasons, this paper discussed the basic principles and related technologies of PIC simulation in details. The major achievements are as follows:1. The space Yee grid model and the time leapfrog model of PIC simulation are given, the discrete time-domain electromagnetic field algorithm formulas of particle-in-cell simulation are derived, the interaction principles of particle and field on the particle-in-cell simulation are studied, the commonly used method of setting the boundary conditions on the PIC simulation are discussed, and the grid generation methods on the PIC simulation are given.2. The phenomenological descriptions on the explosive emission, beam emission and gyro-emission are studied and examples on each emission model are presented to verify accuracy.3. The FDTD (finite-diferential time-domain) simulation method of the metal strut is given, the method is applied to PIC simulation software and related examples are given for testing its correctness.4. The PIC simulation parallel algorithms based on OpenMP and MPI are studied, the two algorithms are applied to the PIC simulation software and test the efficiency, and the thought of combining two parallel algorithms to improve the computing speed is provided. 5. The FDTD method is applied to high-power speaker's antenna simulation and a high-power microwave speaker's antenna is used as an example to verify the correctness of the principle.6. The input and output systems of PIC simulation have been studied, the design ideas of the graphics input settings system based on the CAD and the multi-window output system based on the Windows operating system are put forward and applied to the PIC software and the actual input- output effect is given.
