Wireless sensor network is a new information acquisition and processing technology integrating sensor technology, micro-electronic technology and network communication technology. It is a multidisciplinary crossing research area with tremendous potential value in the military, industrial, medical, transportation, civilian and many other areas. Many achievements have been made in present research. However, in some key technology, a lot of issues are not completely solved. So the research on the theory and application of wireless sensor networks are great significant.Based on the summarizing of present techniques and research results, the dissertation deeply studies on the communication protocol for the application wireless sensor network. The major achievements are outlined as follows:Research on the MAC layer protocol for wireless sensor networks: Based on analyzing the existing MAC protocol for self-organization networks, TM-MAC protocol is designed and implemented in the paper. TM-MAC protocol gives an effective solution to the exposed and hidden terminal problem. And then the reliable bidirectional link is provided for the communication. A large number of testing experiments are proposed with actual sensor nodes to verify the validity and accuracy of the protocol. By testing network connection performance under different topologies, the best performance parameters of TM-MAC protocol have been reached, which provides technical basis for the project practicality of wireless sensor networks.Research on the routing protocol for wireless sensor networks: Research on the characteristics and requirements of the wireless sensor networks routing protocol and analyze the existing routing protocol, an energy efficient routing protocol -- 2ETMRA is proposed. Distributed 2ETMRA routing protocol used the sensor nodes'energy as the measurement, which can establish the topology and rout for large-scale wireless sensor networks. Cluster-Tree logical network topology routing is formed according to data gathered, by which the number of data packets transmitted in the networks is effectively controlled to save energy. Meanwhile, all cluster nodes are those larger energy nodes which can reduce the occurrence of oscillations due to the failure relay node with energy empty. The correctness and performance of 2ETMRA routing protocol are verified by simulation. Moreover, considering the characteristics, the nodes'easy invalidation and wireless links'instability, in the wireless sensor networks'application, the paper presents a fast rerouting protocol– RFRWSN. Used in the cluster-tree logical topology formed by the 2ETMRA, the rerouting protocol can fast repair the breaks transmitting path only in the local area. So the data's reliably transmission is achieved.Research on application layer protocol for the wireless sensor networks: Because of the networks'requirement of the reliably transmitting data and the users'requirement of the monitoring the networks'status and performance, the paper designs and implements the wireless sensor networks application layer protocol and PC monitor software, which provide the relaible theoretical foundation for the realization of the application wireless sensor networks.Finally, based on our own research on communication protocols and hardware design, our team has finished TJU MOTE wireless sensor networks experimental system. Based on this novel experimental system plat, each layer communication protocol designed in the paper has been tested and amended based on the experimental data. So the validity and correctness of wireless sensor networks communication protocol's design are verified.From the practical requirements, the paper studies and designs the wireless sensor networks communication protocols. Those achievements give the great technological supports and valuable information for Chinese wireless sensor networks'research and practical application.
