Recent research on Erbium doped fiber and the background of the newly bismuth doped fiber were compendiously described, characteristics of the different kinds of Erbium doped fibers were analyzed and discussed, principle, history of the Erbium doped fibers and the configurations of the single frequency fiber lasers based on the Erbium doped fiber were introduced. Besides, bismuth doped silica fiber which has a potential using in optical amplification were also introduced. The analysis on the theory of the linear cavity Erbium doped fiber laser was presented, after calculation, the different functions of the parameters presented in the process of fiber laser fabrication was analyzed, after that, Theory of the FBG, especially with the characteristic of high temperature sustainable, were concisely introduced.Novel Erbium-Aluminum-Bismuth co-doped fiber was successfully fabricated, after investigation, it was found that the fiber has a good quality with high absorption coefficient and fluorescence efficiency. With 2cm length this kind of fiber, a single frequency fiber laser with 0.62mW output optical power was successfully developed based on linear cavity, the line width of the fiber laser was narrower than 1kHz and with a more the 30dB side mode suppression. The pump power was effectively used when the fiber laser was amplified with MOPA configuration, output power was also increased to 105mW with a sloped efficiency of 23%.Combine the high temperature sustainable FBG which investigated before in lab, used it as the mirrors of the laser cavity, a compact temperature sensor system based on fiber laser which could be used in a wide temperature range was successfully developed. After experiment, it could be used in the range from room temperature to 400°C with a resolution of 0.1℃.After investigation of the fluorescence characteristics of the bismuth doped silica fibers with and without Al co-dopant and the experience of the fiber laser development of these kind of fibers. It was found that the visible and the infrared fluorescence of the bismuth doped fibers may originate from different emission centers and may be the reason which cause the low efficiency of the bismuth fiber laser temporally. Furthermore, strong up-conversion luminescence was also observed in both Al codoped and non-Al codoped bismuth doped fibers. It is thus expected that by optimizing the compositions and the fabrication conditions of the fiber and then transferring more fluorescence emission centers to which is able to emit in the infrared, a bismuth doped silica fiber with better fluorescence and laser performance may be obtained.
