As a new type of light souce, laser diode (LD) has the advantages of small volume, lighter weight, lower expenses and adjustable wavelength. These characteristics make LD to be widely used in communications, precision measurement, material process, medical treatment and military affairs etc. However its problem about heat is always the focus of attention. In order to ensure the stability and reliability of LD, it is very important to set and maintain a stable temperature. Therefore, heat transfer analysis of laser diode module (LDM) is presented in the paper, and researched on the problems in the thermal control technique for applications. The main research works in this dissertation are as follows:1. Thermoelectric cooler (TEC) is commonly used to cool and maintain LDM junction at predetermined temperature, so performance simulation of TEC is very important for thermal design and optimization of LDM. There has been researched on equivalent circuit model of TEC. But these models suffered from a series of limitations since it only considered ideal devices and conditions. Considered the problem, a new equivalent model of TEC, which taken into account adjunctive thermal resistance and contact resistance, is presented. The new model is clearly closer to the real condition of a TEC. With the equivalent model, we analyze the performance of a TEC under steady-state conditions and transient conditions. Results of various properties about the controlled side temperature from the simulator are discussed. Therefore these results have great value for research and usage of TEC.2. Considered the problem that it is complex and inconvenient using the common temperature field calculating method and experiment method for heat transfer properties of LDM, a new theoretical model is presented to analyze the characteristics of LDM in this paper. Experimental results show that the model is a more effective method for the qualitative analysis of heat transfer characteristics for LDM. And heat source disturbance or outer side space heat flux varieties can be calculated more simple and convenient than using the common unsteady temperature field calculating method.
