PDPs and LCDs are now the most competitive candidates in market of the large-screen display terminal product. The heavy competition forces them keeping on innovations and improvements. The presentation of the plasma display panel with shadow mask shows a promising solution of low cost PDP, which can help PDP technology keep its leader position in the over-40-inch FPD market. Due to some outstanding advantages, such as fast to result and easy to use, the equivalent circuit method has been well developed during recent years. This paper focuses on the design of a suitable equivalent circuit model for SMPDP. The construction and improvement of the complete equivalent circuit model study system for SMPDP as another key work is also described.At first, the detailed cell structure of SMPDP and its working principle is presented. With some experiments and measurements, the practical working property during gas discharge and its relationship with SMPDP load or its drive methods have been collected. Refer to these results, the equivalent circuit model for SMPDP had been established, which is composed of a network of capacitors and some thyristors. The simulation results with this equivalent circuit model of SMPDP in commercial software PSpice show high compatibility with former experiment results, which helps us to certify its preciseness. This equivalent circuit model had been applied in many aspects during SMPDP driver system design and its analysis. For example, it can show the detailed variation of wall-charge, it can calculate the exact power saved by the energy recovery circuit, it also can guide the driver system optimization by demonstrating the influence of every modification on it.For further expanding the SMPDP equivalent circuit model application and reducing the total cost of SMPDP development, the relationship between the SMPDP structure and the driver system performance has been studied. The influences of all the component parameters of this SMPDP equivalent circuit model on the driver system performance have been calculated. A formula to estimate the equivalent capacitance of the SMPDP, one of the most important component parameters, had been presented.
