Plasma display panel (PDP) technology has achieved many excellent performances and it has been regarded as one of the best candidates for the home entertainment terminal of high-definition television (HDTV). PDP has many characteristics, such as self-luminescent, store-effect, extreme non-linear electric characteristic, comparatively simple structure, which make it suitable for large screen and high definition display application. Today, the surface discharge structure is widely adopted, which provides good display quality and has been put into mass production. However the surface discharge structure is still not the best one because of some problems and flaws, such as, the high fabrication cost and the low luminance efficacy. To solve these problems, a novel color plasma display panel with shadow mask (SMPDP) is invented by Southeast University. The methods to reduce the dynamic false contour (DFC) on SMPDP are discussed in this paper. Consequently, the image quality is greatly improved.After the analysis of human visual system, human eyes would use the integral of both temporal and spatial fields to maintain the smooth pursuit eye movement when perceiving the moving images on the screen. Based on the analysis, a software model is developed to simulate the DFC on PDP. By comparing the available methods to reduce the DFC, a novel driving scheme suitable for SMPDP has been proposed. It realizes the multi-gray-level display by the accumulation of sub-field instead of the combination of sub-field. To solve the problem of SMPDP's poor gray levels, the error diffusion arithmetic is used, which focus on video signal processing. To use the driving scheme on 34-inch SMPDP, this paper accomplishes the modification of the core control logic in SMPDP and the appliance of the error diffusion arithmetic realized by FPGA. By the experiments, this paper proves that the image quality on SMPDP is greatly improved by the driving scheme and the DFC are eliminated.
