Digital Light Processing(DLP)is a new way to project and display information, it breaks the limitation of conventional analog display and enhances the potential capability of digital video . The all-digital nature of DLP can create high brightness, high contrast and high resolution images. This thesis begins it's research work from DMD (Digital Micromirror Device) which is the heart of DLP technology. First, a detailed study of the DMD is developed from it's fabrication, architecture, addressing and reset, PWM control etc. The DMD's light modulation principle and it's projection process are mastered. Second, DLP based projection display system is analyzed and researched, a general model of DLP projection display system is presented by analyzing the structures and principles of some DLP projection display systems. Third, a rear projection television (RPTV) based on DLP is designed and the detailed design scheme of it's electronics systems is presented, including electronics overall plan, main control circuit, general video interface, DVI (Digital Visual Interface)circuit, light source controller etc. The PCB for all these circuit units is manufactured. Fourth, the system software and application software are all designed for this DLP rear projection television. Finally, many special techniques of the DLP rear projection television are presented and the solutions for these key techniques are given. At the same time, the reliability design for the RPTV system is developed in three aspects: electronics system, light engine, optical and mechanical structure.
