Study On The Application Basis Of POF Information Transmission Systems

The Glass Optical Fiber (GOF) is already dominant in long-haul communications, but there exist several difficulties when applying it in short-haul communications and home networks, such as high cost and inconvenient connection. Polymer Optical Fiber (POF), for its low cost, flexibility and easy connection, is becoming one of the ideal media in short-haul communications; it has a broad application perspective and attracted extensive attentions. To apply POF in practice several basic problem must be resolved: to analyze the bandwidth of POF accurately and the method of expanding its bandwidth, to extend the transmission distance of POF, the compatibility of POF system with the existing communication system, etc. Under the light of the Important Project of CAS and other application projects, the above-mentioned problems have been studied intensively and systematically in this thesis, several important results are obtained. The following are the main results:1. The mode conversion coefficient of POF and its measurement method were analyzed in details based on the power-flow equation; the mode conversion coefficient of POF was measured experimentally. The mode coupling process in POF was simulated numerically using the experimentally measured coupling coefficient and the coupling length of POF was obtained. The transmission bandwidth of SI POF was analyzed using coupling length; it was enhanced by the mode coupling. A 125Mbpsl50m POF Local Area Networks transmission experiment was carried out successfully, which testified the bandwidth enhancement effect of mode coupling and showed that the transmission distance of SI POF can reach beyond 100 meters.2. The Wave Division Multiplexing (WDM) technology was applied to POF transmission system successfully, a 100M IP digital signal and a analog signal were sending on a same POF. The experiment shows the feasibility of using WDM technology to improve the transmission bandwidth of POF.3. A Free Space Optical (FSO) communication system was developed, which is compatible with the POF LAN system. The communication experiment shows that the FSO system can extend the transmission distance of the POF system. The FSO system has the advantage of easy installation, which enhances the flexibility of POF system in practical use.4. A set of POF devices and transmission system are developed, including POF wavelength converter, POF repeater, POF switch and POF net-card.
