In Clusters, the performance of inter-node communication is the critical factor which affects the actual performance of Clusters enormously. So an efficient design and implementation of inter-node communication plays an important role in the research and development of Clusters and has been a hot research topic in recent years.On the basis of the comprehensive understanding of the existing techniques for inter-node communication, firstly, the mainstream techniques, key problems and strategies in building inter-node communication systems for Clusters have been studied thoroughly. Then, the objects which should be achieved in an ideal efficient communication for Cluster are put forward and the corresponding solutions to reach these objects are given. Furthermore, several key problems such as the structure of network interface, classification of messages and algorithm of flow control are analyzed in details and studied in depth. Finally, the research results have been applied successfully to the development of the efficient inter-node communication for two realistic Clusters implementations.To be specific, the contributions of this dissertation are as follows:First, a definition of efficient communication systems for Clusters is given, and its structure, functions and characteristics are depicted. A general method to evaluate efficient systems for Clusters is also given, which is based on the analysis of some popular evaluation models for communication systems.Second, some contemporary representative communication systems for MPPs and Clusters are studied in depth. Further more, the backgrounds, basic ideas and advantages of some mainstream techniques to develop efficient inter-node communications for Clusters are analyzed. and some key problems which are encountered in building inter-node communication systems for Clusters are pointed out, and the corresponding solutions are given.Third, the objects, which should be achieved by efficient communications...
