Animation making, especially 3D animation making, is a promising industry developing at a high speed. As many 3D animation movies come into the market and 3D net games become popular, people are fully aware of the huge market value and cultural value of animation industry. 3D animation industry has been orientated as a new economic growth point in Europe, U.S.A., Korea, Japan and other countries or regions. In this situation, our government also begins to support and develop native animation industry vigorously, and considers its relevant scientific research as an important part in the state scientific and technological development program. Although animation industry is getting mature, its automaticity, verisimilitude and flexibility remain to be improved. Therefore, computer graphics researches have been focusing on theories and algorithms related to 3D animation making in recent years. In this article, three key questions have been probed into: 3D mesh editing, tween-frame animation interpolation and 3D mesh simplification.Three modeling tools are frequently used in current 3D animation making: 3D polygonal mesh, NURBS surface and subdivision surface. The first one is the most popular. As to polygonal mesh modes, especially to high-density mesh modes of real objects, parametrization, mesh simplification, multiresolution analysis, animation and deformation, shade and shadow calculation as well as rendering processing become focuses of computer graphics in recent years. All of them can be summarized under the title of Digital Geometry Processing. Its concept and contents are gradually accepted and adopted in documents of relevant conferences and publications.
