Streaming media is a combination of broad-band communication technology and multimedia technology. In recent years, with the popularization of the Internet and the deep research of 3G mobile communications, video streaming media technology has gained much attention. Researches focusing on streaming media, such as digital media content production, processing, storage, scheduling, transmission, caching and reception, become the hotspots of multimedia and communication area nowadays. In this dissertation, the author's major research work in this area is summarized as follows: a network cost based caching method is presented; a novel two-level caching proxy architecture for mobile streaming service is proposed, and the corresponding optimized streaming scheduling algorithm is designed; a multi-controller based cluster streaming proxy architecture is introduced, the controller group selection algorithm and the master controller election and handover protocol is devised, formalized logical calculus is employed to verify its validity; the peer-to-peer based streaming architecture is studied and a ZETA (Zigzag Enhanced Topology-aware Architecture) structure is presented, the replication and replacement policy is proposed; a simulation platform is constructed to verify the correctness and to analyze the performance of the above algorithms. The thesis describes the research works in detail, the principal contributions of the work presented in this thesis are:(1) By taking the fact that, in a streaming media service system, multiple content servers may provide video streaming respectively, a novel caching utility function is proposed, which integrate the popularity character of the media program and the cost of the transmission network together. A network cost based streaming media cache allocation and replacement algorithm (NCB) is designed for multi-server streaming application. By employing the NCB algorithm, the cache hit rate can be improved obviously and the total network cost can be decreased effectively. In the Internet streaming application environment, where the network connections between content servers and caching proxy are heterogeneous, the amount of streaming servers and programs is...
