Optical fiber communication becomes the dominated method of communication in the backbone because of its tremendous bandwidth and extremely low transmission loss of fibers. With the rapid development of DWDM (Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing) technologies, the available number of wavelengths in the fiber link increases quickly and consequently the WDM layer is formed. How to make good use of the tremendous bandwidth in the WDM layer to establish an all-optical network is an important area of research.Today WRON (Wavelength Routing Optical Network) is one of the best ways to realize an all-optical network because of its advantages of easy management, flexible configuration and transparent transmission. It can be classified as static type and dynamic type according to the establishment of the lightpath. RWA (Routing and Wavelength Assignment) is the critical problem in the design of a WRON. Fault management in a WRON with QoS (Quality of Service) guaranteed has attracted much attention recently. The main subject of this thesis is WRON, which includes the research work in RWA, fault management and algorithm in graph theory. The details can be listed as follows:1. the research work of the RWA problem in a WRON ring;2. the research work of the RWA problem in a WRON of star topology;3. the research work of establishing an analytical model for a dynamic star WRON;4. the research work of establishing an analytical model for the availability analysis of a WRON with the SPP (Shared Path Protection) scheme;5. the research work of K-shortest path selecion problem;6. the research work of multiple constraints path selection problem .A trend for the future network is IP over DWDM. WRON plays an important role in the WDM layer and will have wide applications in the future.
