For the solution of some questions arised in contemporary newspapers format, this essay advances Total Page Visual Language Concept basing on the idea that the design of format actually means the design of news. This concept refers to a comprehensive application of visual elements to format, which especially emphasize the importance to treat format with a sense of design. By creating a format with rhythm, we work out a solution.The component elements of format include image, words, color, headline, line and white space. These elements stand for nothing separately, but they function as visual language while integrated to display news in a format. And this process is an application of Total Page Visual Language. It ultimately aims to embody a fascinating rhythm in content and to meet three essential requirements in form as following: 1. make it easy to read-use typography that is clear, easy on the eyes, and very legible; 2. make it easy to find-employ navigational tools that allow the reader to get to content he wishes to read in the least amount of time possible; 3. make it visually appealing-provide an environment in which good content will find attractive display, thus increasing the number of readers who will use it. In general, a format is designed to show the reader a convenient access, so that the reader can enjoy reading newspaper without any difficulty. As a matter of fact, a perspective of design is employed during this course.But how to fulfill the aim? Starting with newspapers'challenges in culture environment, this essay explicates the influences on reader acceptance mode brought by localized design and electronic medium culture. To accept the challenges newspapers should change their antiquated concept, review the components of news and revise the standard for judging news value in format. This essay also considers itnecessary to enlarge the implication of local news, to concentrate on legible effect in format and relevant interpretation in content, and to create attractive typograpy through localized design. Meanwhile this essay points out a direction for newspapers to exploit their visual potentialities forever-graphic view on format contents. Regarding passages as a kind of art, we consider images and words together during the course, then try our best to display the format with images.Vision is not a simple copy of elements but grasp of the whole frame and style. As Gestalt Psycology is applied to this essay as academic foundation, Total Page Visual Language correspondingly regards format as "a whole" and visual language "integral parts" which affect each other and still reserve their own features. This understanding is a very important premise for our comprehensive application of Total Page Visual Language.This essay gives an explanation of Total Page Visual Language mainly in three aspects: Firstly, apply visual elements to express news information. When we design a format with visual concept in mind, all of the basic elements including image, words, color, headline, line and white space can be used to appropriately help readers understand and accept the information in format. Secondly, apply visual elements to guide reader's view movement on format. Research are made on how to use visual elements to navigate reader's view movement to touch every part of the format following editor's purpose. Finally, apply visual elements to create a visual identification system of newspaper. It depends on column division, characteristic design of group report and oriented identification system of visual elements.This essay puts forward Total Page Visual Language Concept and analyzes how to integrate the visual elements in format with a lot of cases. Its purpose is to provide some optional solutions for questions appeared in newspapers.
