The human face modeling and its expression animation is both a hot topic and a difficult problem in the research field of computer graphics. But its software products can be widely used in virtual reality (VR) system, visual telephone and long-distance teaching. For example, we can replace the human face in videos by using computer face modeling and its expression animation in above systems. As a result, the network bandwidth can be reduced when transmit these videos using computer network. Yet now a lot of problems about this theme need to be solved because of the complication of a human face. A new 3D human face model is put forward in this paper after some characters of the human face and the muscle tissues on the face are researched and some actions of the facial expression are analyzed. In this model we divide the whole face into some parts according to its structure. To each part, we apply the principle of elastomer metamorphosing to our face model, so a specific face model can be easily gotten by modifying a common face model. In this paper we also bring forward a new animation model based on the principle of elastomer metamorphosing. By using this model our two basic expression animation 搉ictitating* and 搊pening mouth* are produced. There are some new ideas as follows in our research: 1. Some complicated solutions become simple after dividing a human face into some parts. 2. Taking the human face as a elastomer. 3. Simulating the facial expression by using elastomer metamorphosing. Some principles of displaying human face are also discussed in the paper. And some techniques of fairing and smoothing on the curved surface are sometimes used when a 3D face is not a trim surface. Here a method called cubic B-B curved surface is used to smooth every part of the human face and a method called the minimum energy is used to fair the whole human ii face. Some techniques of the light models and the texture mapping are also introduced in the paper. The algorithms of producing a specific human face model and its expression animation are given in this paper. And also we present a new system of the face modeling and the facial expression animation, called as HDFACE, which developed by the author. Some good results from the system are shown in the paper.
