3D face modeling is the research focus in computer graphics and computer vision, and has many challenging open problems. It can be widely used in many areas, such as film, advertisement, character animation, computer game, teleconference, human computer interface, medicine, and safeguard etc. Face recognition is one of the most important applications.Currently most of the face recognition methods are focus on 2D methods; however, the recognition rate is limited by various illumations, poses and expressions. One effective solution is to use the 3D face model. In addition, with the development of Communication and Digital Entertainment, the auto-generated 3D face caricatures by computer will be widely used. Since the animation industry including animation, cartoon, video, web-game and mobile-phone games are becoming the economic point of growth, the 3D Face Caricaturing, as the key technique of digital animation, shoud be deeply explored.The traditional 3D face modeling method need several face images, and modify a general face model. The Morphable Model method which was proposed several years ago is a new way that could modeling 3D face from one image. Comparing with the classic face modeling methods, such as the parametric model, the physical model and the deformable model, the Morphable Model has advantages in realism and automation, while there are many aspects of the model to be improved and explored, for examples, the model buliding, the optimizing, the illuminating and its applications. According to the limits above, our work concentrates on the 3D face modeling from one image based on the improved Morphable Model. The main works are presented as following:(1) The improved method of 3D face modeling from one image.According to the problems of the 3D Morphable Model method, we proposed an improved method of 3D face modeling based on Sparse Morphable Model and implemented the plantform. This method successfully solve the difficulty the pixel-to-pixel alignments among the face samples. This methods involve many techniques such as Building Sparse Morphable Model, Face Detection, Feature Points Extraction, Parameters Optimizing and Warp of geometric model. In addition, a Skin Model-based Texture rendering method was proposed, and the skin of 3D side-face is more realistic(2) Synthesis of 3D Facial Expressions.By applying the Face Code Action System to 3D face model, we can synthesis 3D facial expressions flexibly(3) 3D Facial Caricaturing.By studing the auto-generated 3D facial caricaturing techniques, we proposed a method based on exaggerating the global structure and local features separately. This method could generated varied caricature styles.(4) Application on Face Recognition.According to the illuminations and poses problems in face recognition, we studied the face recognition based on 3D face models. The synthesisd virtual face images of varied poses, illuminations and expressions can be used as additional train samples. This method was proved to improve the recognition rate and robustness.By deeply exploring the topics above, we have implemented the 3D face modeling method and solved some key techniques in face modeling and applications, and made some achievments...
