On-board processing (OBP) is believed to be a very important direction of developing advanced communication satellite technology ; asynchronous transfer mode (ATM)is considered as the key core technology in the coming communication networks. Therefore, it would be very interesting and significant to combine OBP and ATM, providing communications of broadband integrated service for a very wide area. This dissertation introduces the author research about on board ATM switching techniques as well as a scheme of such satellite communication system. The research is supported by a project of Military Electronic Research Foundation ?揂 new Switching system of realizing interconnection of the national military networks? The dissertation has obtained several original results in the research of the ATM switching satellite communication, these results are follow as: 1) Proposing a reasonable multi梐ccess mode and modem approach for on梑oard ATM switching satellite communication system. 2) Proposing a suitable coding scheme for on--board ATM switching and studying a novel coding method for ATM cell transmission via satellite links. 3) Providing an effective solution for the system synchronization, and presenting some approaches used to bandwidth assignment of links or channels. 4) Based on the detail examination of various related issues, a 40X40 on梑oard ATM switch is designed, including discussion of timing and control for switch. 5) Proposing a control algorithm for reducing congestion of on梑oard ATM switching called as the backward broadcast feedback and link channels flow control. Besides, a simulation system to demonstrate the function of 3X3 ATM switching is built, by using 3 PC computers whose RS-232C series interfaces are connected with each other. The research results of the dissertation would be a very useful reference for implementation of building such a communication system in future.
