It is widely convinced that the polarization parameters of light contain particular information compare with the intensity, phase and spectrum. More and more researchers pay their attention to the analysis and applications of the characteristics of light polarization state. Different diffusers with different surface patterns or made of different kinds of materials are able to be differentiated according to the information contained by the polarization state of their scattered light. Scattered light polarization imaging has an advantage in the field of material differentiation and also can provide a better contrast compare with traditional imaging method based on the intensity of light. The scattered light polarization imaging method has a potential application value in the fields of target imaging, detection and clutter rejection.The scattered light polarization characteristics of given materials are analyzed and discussed orient the detection of space target. Detection systems and methods are designed to measure the intensity distributions, spectrum characteristics and polarization degree distributions of scattered light of given metal materials and solar panel materials which are illuminated by natural light. Relative mathematical model I established to realize the differentiation of different materials.Theoretical analysis and the experiment which aims at special targets indicate that the intensity distributions and spectrum characteristics of scattered light of different material vary with detection parameters; however, the regularity is not remarkable. On the contrary, the differences of polarization degrees and polarization distributions of different materials are quite remarkable, the variation of the polarization degrees are monotone, and the directions of their variations are opposite. This characteristic represents the differences of different targets and provides theoretical and experimental bases for the detection of space target based on the analysis of scattered light polarization characteristic of materials' surfaces.For the scattered light transferred a distant path through the atmosphere in the application of space target detection, theoretical analysis and calculate simulation are given aimed at the variation of scattered light polarization characteristics emerged when the scattered light transferred through a distant path in the atmosphere. The theoretical analysis and calculate simulation provide theoretical basis to the detection of space target in a long distance. The gestures and detecting background of space targets are considered in the analysis of scattered light polarization characteristics of targets. The space targets are classified by their gestures and the detecting background is explained. The detection method of space targets with different gestures are given based on the analysis of scattered light polarization characteristics and the anti-jamming ability of scattered light polarization characteristics under the condition of space targets detection background is discussed. The analysis of scattered light polarization characteristics for the detection of space targets is researched in terms of engineering applications.All of the research and conclusions above provide theoretical bases and experimental foundations for the space target detection.
