The human eye is not only the most important sense organ, but also a skylight perspective of the conditions inside the body. The dynamic characteristics of eyes not only reflects the functional status of eyes, but also indicates the status of tissues, organs and system inside the body. An objective, quantitative system should be designed in order to detect the dynamic characteristics of eyes in the field of medicine, because it is important to promote the medical research on testing dynamic characteristics of eyes as a new technology.In this paper, we systematically analyzed the abnormal performance of eyes caused by the eye disease as well as the disease of other tissues, organs and systems. Especially,we analyzed various types of ocular symptoms caused by the brain damage or pathological changes. We also studied of the association between ocular symptoms and many diseases such as diabetes, cerebral thrombosis, dementia, brain herniation, cerebral infarction, and other neurological diseases. It was demonstrated that the detection of eyes' dynamic characteristics can be used as a method to diagnose diseases. A way was proposed that is objective, quantitative, and accurate for the detection of eyes'dynamic characteristics. Firstly, The eye images were taken under natural status or stimulated status, and then, the images were processed so as to extract the geometry of the pupil and iris accurately. In the end, the dynamical values of eyes were getten.According to the clinical requirements of eye detection, a comprehensive dynamic testing system was designed with the integrated use of optical technology, computer technology, database, Visuanl C++programming and image processing techniques based on mathematical morphology. An algorithm was proposed to preprocessed eye images, and another algorithm on iris location was also proposed. Different spectral images of eyes were processed in different ways. The success achieved in detecting the initial characteristics of eyes under photopic or scotopic testing conditions, and also achieved in the dynamic characteristics of pupillary light reflex in the light stimulation mode. This paper described the hardware design and the algorithms, and the experimental results were given.According to the scheme designed for clinical experiments, a large number of cases were detected, including cases of oculomotor nerve palsy, oculomotor nerve damage, optic nerve damage, Horner syndrome, diabetes, etc. This paper described the clinical trials and discussion under the guidance of doctors. The results show that the ocular symptoms are associated with these diseases. Therefore, it is demonstrated that the detection of eye's dynamic characteristics can be used as a method in finding cause of many diseases, and also be used in localization diagnosis, differential diagnosis and early diagnosis.This work will facilitate the application that the dynamic detection of eyes is used in medical research.
