Duanmu Hongliang, whose original name is CAO Jingping (1912-1996), is one of the most important writers in northeast China. His father was a landlord and his mother was forced to be a concubine and gave birth to him. His mother used to live in a poor peasant's family. This kind of living mind produced depression and disappointment in his heart. This was the source of his works and was written into the society, people and life in his works.Three different periods could be summarized as developing phases in Duanmu Hongliang's literary life. His first work The Grassland in Ke'er Qinsi is commented as the primary learning period and his other two stages of writing was divided by 1942, the year of Ms XIAO Hong's death. The Grassland in Ke'er QinSi is Duanmu Hongliang's first work. .His later works'features and personal elements were all shown and could be noticed in this one. The Grassland is a biographical record of Duanmu Hongliang's own life. The Ding Family's rise and decline is the main content in this novel. The history and events happened in two centuries after the September 18 Incident could be found in this novel. The events written therein embodied the declining fortunes of feudal system, lords, and peasants. Under the fast and fierce changing decades, the images of land and the main role Ding Ning were naturally accepted and welcomed by readers. In his works during 1930s, the themes of The Grassland of Ke'er Qinsi were developed in his later works one after another. The theme of land and the central spirit of children of land was the first theme reflected in his works like The Land Sea which gave a philosophical meaning between people and their motherland. In his novel The Great River the land in his novel was widely portrayed as the whole China. The Grassland of Ke'er Qinsi, The Land Sea and The Great River together described a whole scene from mountains to other places in China and pictured the whole period of China-Japan War. Secondly, the theme of protecting motherland in The Grassland of Ke'er Qinsi was improved as one of the main tone of Duanmu Hongliang's novels during the 1930s. The struggles and fights between peasants and landlords were developed and strengthened as the third feature of his 1930's works. Fourth, the writer also give thoughts to social activities and the Chinese sicknesses in mind in the works during 1930s.Duanmu Hongliang's wife XIAO Hong died in Hong Kong because of suffering life in war in 1942. Sadness and loneliness in the writer's heart was expressed under his pen in the tales and legends later produced. The real living life's pains, cruelty, coldness and the inevitable force can not be controlled by people were all in his works after 1942. This style was completely different from the passion to change in works before 1942. The standing point viewing the world was changed in Duanmu Hongliang's heart and description. First person was used to introduce things and a heart watching perspective was used. The roles were acting as observers of life but not participants in reality.Film editing methodology put into organization of novel content and emotional description of stories changed his later style. Having using and changing his was of writing and drew different writing methods from other peers, Duanmu Hongliang's language and local features in his works created different aesthetical and stylistic features in his novels and other works. |
