On The Paradoxical State Of Shen Chongwen's Creation Of Novels

In the circle of China?contemporary literature Shen Chongwen is no doubt a notable figure. Within 25 years of his creation, he published a large quantities of novels with wide range of subjects and complicated contents, which was rarely seen in contemporary China. Yet the internal research on his literary creation went zigzagged, or even on unnormal path. Shen Chongwen, therefore, was treated unfairly. Since the new period the research on him has gradually gone on the normal tracks, which establish his unique statue in Chinese history of contemporary literature, and recognize his contributions to it. This benefits, on one hand, from the great vitality of his beyond-time works, on the other, from dutiful researchers and the regular mood in literary critics. The author thinks, through his works, that the key that makes his works unique lies in paradox. His paradoxical thoughts and feelings were formed upon his legendary life experience. As a result, he wrote his novels to build his ideal world and rest his tired heart with inferiority and self-respect, in the hope and disappointed, in the dream and reality. In his writing, Xiangxi was a beautiful place with beautiful mountains, beautiful water and beautiful people. The life there was full of original power: active, pure and optimistic. The nature of the people was elegant, healthy and free. Meanwhile, Xiangxi was an old and wild place. The lack of knowledge built up uncivilized and unreasonable, poor and simple human nature. The cities in his writing served as a contrast to the country. Compared with plain human nature of Xiangxi, the urban human nature, no doubt, is twisted and alien, which is awful appearance of the urban human nature. At the same time, cities, after all, were dipped in the modern civilization. The contradiction of the civilization shows its evolution and progress of the urban human nature. Shen's works are based on the paradoxical thoughts and feelings, which result in his creation in a paradoxical state, making his novels various, rich and profound. All these can be confirmed from both praise and ill remarks on his novels. The paradox of the commons, which indicates the rich contents of his novels in paradoxical state, are expressed in two aspects: 1. Is Shen Chongwen's novel brink or central; 2. Is Shen Chongwen's novel backward or forward. It is his creation in the paradoxical form that makes Shen Chongwen among the best contemporary writers.
