The term Design Standard has become a new question when the discussion of standardization has been raised recently. Accordingly, based on the discussion of the disciplines of design standard and its relationship with design practice, this paper tried to build a new sight to understand design standard, and also aimed to establish a research framework of design standard.This paper began with reviewing the general theory of standard; by focusing on the reality and problems of the standard in Chinese design, general standard theory has been developed. After exploring the theory of design standard, a set of design standard possibility, realistic and feasibility conditions were discussed as well. As these conditions determine the design standards associated with complex technologies, as well as the concept and policy aspects, so the design standards has been summed up with the ideal and reality, policy, system and other relevant characteristics. The approximate analysis of design standard in this study was based on a number of case studies; the analyses included the classification of design standard, and also its content, structure, modes of origin and development. According to searching the mode of origin and development of design standard, there was a structure in this mode, it could be described into three points: (i) identifying with the conception is the precondition and motive of building design standard; (ii) technology is the foundation and support of design standard's content; (iii) policy is the guide and protection for the implementation of design standard. In the end, this paper discussed the applicability of design standard, and tried to find a way to build design standard in China with practice perspective.This paper has always been exploring the predicament of design standard in reality, trying to seek the reason of the retardation in building design standard in China. It is expected that through the standard competition, the Chinese design would be competitive in the world.
