A Systematic Study Of The Cultural Features Of Doors In China

Doors, the creation of the human race, are carriers of cultures.Doors are materialized industrial products. On the one hand, a door has an integrated working system, such as the form, the body, the accessories, the decorations and so on; on the other hand, a door functions, within the system of the architecture, as the entrance of group buildings, courtyards and houses. In this dissertation, in order to study, within a framework based on multi-levels, multi-perspectives and multi-orientations, the organic integration brought about by the interaction and interrelation among various structures, doors, human beings, objects, environment and society are treated as a whole, the complicated configuration of doors broken down into simple elements, and the unified whole reduced to sections. Upon plenty of literature review and field work, this research has made in-depth investigation and dialysis of such perspectives as the Chinese character of "é—¨", functions, visual iconic language, specialties, social traits, and humanized designing, etc.. And this does not only enrich the in-built nature and the definition of the Chinese character "é—¨", enlarge the containment of doors and delineate the door-centered Chinese culture but also enlarges the depth and breadth of our understanding of designing.It is shown through the study that there exist windages between the present-day understanding of the character "é—¨" and its implied meaning given by the ancient people who created it. And this reflects the regularity of progressive evolution in history. What's more, on the one hand, doors can be opened and closed thus letting passengers in and out and employed to delimit a certain space, and on the other hand doors bring us enjoyment of beauty. This enjoyment is based on perfect proportion and multiple decorations. All the aspects of the leaf, ornaments, doorway and the accessories embody the Chinese culture. Under the influence of such factors as function, environment, region and so forth, doors exhibits rich and colorful shapes and forms and the influence of the Ru Culture of China. In this study, it can also be found out that all kinds of wishes towards life are transformed into signs on doors. What's more, the wisdom embodied through the detailed structures has surpassed the original function of doors and become the comprehensive carrier of cultures and showcased the necessity of humanized designing in a harmonious society.Designing, one of the important components of human civilization, is carried by some concrete and useful entities. For thousands of years, designing does not only create comfortable environment and provide convenient utensils for human beings but also records the wisdom of the human race. This research starts with the study of the superficial structure of doors and purports to find out the causes and conditions of the change of products, the regulations and influences of the form of products on the consciousness and behaviors of the human race, and model of the systemic relationship of "man-things-nature-society" in the development of products. The study of designing is also the study of the cultures of the human race. Though different products meet different needs, the essence of designing can be reasoningly talked about through the superficial changes of products. Simple and common as the doors are, they contain the essence of this world and the regularities of designing.
