Jia Yi Cultural Character Study

As an important writer, thinker and statesman in the early Western Han Dynasty, Jia Yi extensively and profoundly influenced the later generations. Jia Yi's research has been a hot topic in the intellectual word. Although researchers of all ages studied Jia Yi in the aspects of thought, politics, philosophy, economics, education, literature and so on, there are not many monographs on the study of Jia Yi available after the general survey of the existing research results. In addition to the comprehensive study made by a few intellectuals Wang Xingguo, Wang Yaoming and et al., the other works are mainly under the categories of translation, annotation, collection and check. They are lacking in new research vision,particularly the shortage of deep and systemic studies of Jia Yi's cultural quality and style. Many reasons have contributed to it: first, Jia Yi's life is short and the emperor of Han Dynasty has a long ,long time away from now,and there is relatively lack of research materials of Jia Yi; secondly, the research achievement of Jia Yi made in previous ages is relatively scattered and its systematization is not strong; thirdly, the intellectual word has different view on Jia Yi's works quality and style of thought and culture. Different people have different views, and there have been many people who just echo the view of others, what's more the research of some special topic also appears repeated topic selection and not detailed discussion. The figure without cultural quality and style is difficult to"stand"of course, it's hard to further other researches of him if his cultural quality and style is not studied. Therefore, the article tried to start with the existing works of Jia Yi, fully using the research achievements made by the wise and virtuous elders, so as to make a attempt to investigate systematically Jia Yi's cultural quality and style.The article's new ideas embody in the following fields:At first, it divided the researches on Jia Yi of all ages by the dynasties. Which no one has made any attempts yet. Influenced by the academic thoughts in different ages, the approaches to the study of Jia Yi in the past ages are different. The article thought of as Jia Yi's researches in the past ages can be divided the studies on Jia Yi into three periods in terms of the dynasties, namely, from the Han Dynasty to the Five Dynasties, from the Song Dynasty to the Qing Dynasty and from the modern times to the contemporary era. Generally speaking, the studies on Jia Yi from the Han Dynasty to the Five Dynasties feature a wide variety of commentaries, involving in the life, cultural quality and style and works expressions, which are just lack of systemic and deep research. From the Song Dynasty, as the emerging of the thoughts of the Song Dynasty Confucianism's being suspicious of Confucian classics, part of Jia Yi's works had been under suspicion and investigated, as a result, various studies appeared. The researches on Jia Yi's life, works, cultural quality and style, thinking property were the important part in this period. From the modern times to the contemporary era, Jia Yi's research has entered into a pluralistic study stage in depth. A consensus about the outstanding issues on the works'truth and falsehood and his thought property has been reached gradually.Secondly, the article summed up and discussed systematically the cultural quality and style of Jia Yi. The article believed that the cultural quality and style of Jia Yi mainly included contents in five aspects, i.e. the profound reflection of history and the realistic spirit of criticism, strong reform consciousness in his times, solid ideal of being loyal to the emperor and patriotism, deep feelings of loving the common people and spirit of pursuit with continuous surpassing, which had been thoroughly demonstrated in his works. Jia Yi reflected and criticized in depth the history of the Qin Dynasty and the social reality of the current dynasty at that time in his works, trying to create a state administrative programme to bring about the long-term stability of the imperial court in the Han Dynasty. This reflection and spirit of criticism is the keynote of"New Book"by Jia Yi and it's also Jia Yi's outstanding cultural quality and style, which has been recognized, carried on and developed by intellectuals of all ages. Jia Yi was a writer with a strong sense of reform consciousness in his times, this kind of cultural quality and style was fully embodied in his works. The solid ideal of being loyal to the emperor and patriotism was the obvious cultural quality and style of Jia Yi and was the thought basis in his career of participating in politics and involving in literature. This cultural quality and style mainly originated in Xunzi's thought of the combination of Taoism and law and the reconciliation of Confucianism and law, meanwhile, it came from his political practice of participating in the court's management as well. The deep feelings of loving the common people was one of Jia Yi's important cultural qualities and styles. He inherited the thought of people orientation since the Zhou Dynasties and the Qin Dynasty, clearly informing the rulers of the current dynasty at that time that the most important governmental affair was people orientation and putting forward a series of measures to benefit the ordinary people. Jia Yi's life was a life of unceasing pursuit and surpassing, this pursuit spirit of uninterrupted advancement became the highlight in Jia Yi's cultural qualities and styles.Thirdly, the article put forward the imagery of Jia Sheng and discussed and analyzed it. The cultural quality and style of Jia Yi have been accepted and recognized by poets all through the ages. Under the diction of and purport of the poet's writings, Jia Yi, the literary predecessor with great talents as the sea and mysterious life as smoke, has been often used as the eulogistic objects. Jia Yi has become a corresponding subject for the poets to pursue and mourn and has been fixed gradually for a long time as a literary imagery. When discussing Jia Yi's influence on the later generations, the article put forward the concept of"the imagery of Jia Sheng"and investigated and expounded it.Fourthly, the article explored the impact of the cultural quality and style of Jia Yi from the angel of Hunan culture. Changsha has been known as the"painful place for Jia Yi who suffered wrongs". Although Jia Yi only stayed in Changsha for three years, but his cultural quality and style has become Genes of Hunan culture and it has big impact on the formation of Hunan culture's property and the careers of cultural elite in Hunan. Therefore, the article mainly discuss the influence of Jia Yi's cultural quality and style from the formation of Hunan culture's property and the careers of cultural elite in Hunan.
