Romance Pattern And Chinese Modern Novel

This paper is a systematic sort-out and exposition of the process and expression of the creative and development from Chinese ancient conventional"legendary narrative"to Chinese modern novel's narrative.According to the methodological principle of the unity of the convention and development, this paper inspects the narrative traits of Chinese ancient novels and modern novels. Furthermore, it summarizes the legendary narrative features of Chinese modern novels, analyzes and studies the comparison of the legendary narrative traits between the Chinese modern novels and Chinese ancient novels. Therefore, it can be proved that the legend is an important style of Chinese novel, as well as a significant narrating tradition which has been inherited and creatively converted not disappeared in modern Chinese novels that originated from anti-traditionThe ways of thought of discussion are as follows:Firstly, in the development of Chinese ancient novel, the legend as the maturity style of novel, not only is the core of narrative"expression"model, but also is the novel's"acceptance"model which is accepted by the Chinese common people. As to the overall development of Chinese novels, the legend would have powerful influence on the narrative convention.Secondly, in the transformational development of Chinese modern novels, in order to meet the requirement of the social reformation and enlightenment, the Chinese novels really started to get free from the fetters of the traditional theme standard and formation, especially chose the legendary narrative method because of its legendary plot, public acceptance and the folk value.Thirdly, after the May Fourth Movement, during the development of establishing the modern novel's narrative ideas and models, there's a tendency of learning Western novels and opposing tradition, but because of social and cultural factors such as the formation of modern society, the aim of enlightenment and salvation, the increasing number of the public readers and the refinement of folk style, the legendary narrative has become significant and influential rather than eliminated.Fourthly, in each historical period of Chinese modern novel development, the conventional legendary narrative is consciously, individually, creatively changed, used and developed. Moreover, it becomes a peculiar expressional formation of the Chinese modern novel's narrative. This part is the body of the paper, demonstrated as followings:1. In his work-Old Tales Retold, based on the basic point of paradoxical"middle thing", with the strategy of"actual contrary", Lu Xun created a sort of"historical legend"which is between"history"and"reality".2. In the description of the mysterious and distinctive"Xiang Xi world", Shen Congwen created the"pastoral legend"with romantic flavor and the method which is avoiding"normality"and adopting"peculiarity".3.In 1930s and 1940s,the writers of New Feeling School and Post-Romanticism School created"modern urban legend"with the color of unconventional model, depended on Shanghai-a legendary world-as their headquarter.4. In her work of Legend , Zhang Ailing established a"new legend"idea which is based on the"unity of contrary"models with"common and uncommon", she also created"modern citizens'legend"which refers to the modern urban commonplace people's life.5. After May Fourth Movement, the Polo writers, Left Wing writers and writers of Liberated areas, all those are the Left Wing literature main stream, created a"common consciousness"style novel-revolutionary legend within the framework of ideology, from angles of"bigness"and"smallness".Lastly, this modern legendary narrative, which keeps close relation to the conventional legend, has always been reflected in the literary practice after the time of foundation of New China, including the"Red Classic"literature, local literature and urban literature, which all inherit this conventional legendary narrative and become a peculiar scene in New Chinese literature.The large-scale of the development in different stages finally draws the objective and conclusion of this paper- the conventional legendary narrative of Chinese ancient novels'is necessary to the enrichment of Chinese modern novel and is significant to the development of the Chinese modern novels. Besides, this literary history analysis, which is based on"tradition and development"dialectical relation, leads us to have a correct knowledge of the Chinese literature from Marxist dialectical historical point of view and development. Furthermore, we'll scientifically understand and grasp the significant meaning of the conventional literature and culture which is established from the New Century literature and culture.
