The Notes of Song Dynasty are important objects of the study of the Modern Chinese. There are plentiful lexical materials and theoretical recordings in the Notes of Song Dynasty. In the study of Chinese language, especially in the study of lexicology, the latter has the equal importance as the former. The fact is that many books center on the study of words of the Notes of Song Dynasty, but pay no attention to the theoretical recordings the Notes deserved. Only a few articles mention or deal with the theoretical recordings in the Notes of Song Dynasty.Lots of items, which describing or discussing the lingual penomena, arc kept in the Notes of Song Dynasty. They are valuable to the study of Song Dynasty's language, to the theoretical study of Modem Chinese lexicology, and to the study of Chinese history. The paper choose three aspects to expound the theoretical values of the Notes of Song Dynasty, one is the research on rhetorical word-formations , the other is the analysis of pragmatics meanings of a word, another is the study of the spoken language words.Four chapters are there in the paper.Chapter one, a general introduction of the writing and the main characteristics of the Notes of Song Dynasty. This paper illustrats theoretical values of the Notes with examples such as their talking about words formed by the same morphemes in different orders, cognate words, tone-changing word-formations, the semantic motivations of compound words, and so on.Chapter two, research on rhetorical word-formations. Rhetorical word-formation, one of Chinese word-formations, is a kind of economical, national ones and boats a long history. When the Notes of Song Dynasty analysed the semantic motivations or meanings of words, they told us the word-formations of these words. On the basis of this, we can conclude that in addition to the need of naming new things, the social psychological factors pursuing for novelty, strangeness and elegance, play key roles in the process of word-formation. This is the most imporant character for rhetorical word-formation, distinct from another word-formations. Double syllable compound words, espacilaly formed by one morpheme modifying another, were the majority of the words formed by rhetorical ways in the Notes. It not only accorded with the syllable-doubling trend of Modern Chinese, also catered to people' cognitive habits.Chapter three, the Note of Song Dynasty noticed, the meaning of the words may vary with the context. They recorded and analyzed this phenomenon, showing the beginings of pragmatic conceptions. Analyzing the word's pragmatic meanings and its pragmatic features are very important to the study of Ancient Chinese lexicology. Using related materials in the Notes of Song Dynasty, this paper discusses the necessity of differentiating between pragmatic meanings of the same word.Chapter four, there are many constructive ideas or methods of Chinese study in the Notes of Song Dynasty, for example they explored the extension of word, such as the word's extended meanings, the exteding trends or causes, the changeing forms, etc. Morphemic analysis can explicitly and directly reflects the track of extending. This paper points out that morphemic analysis is very useful to the study of lexicology, and the meanings extension not only embodies in the nuclear morphemes, also embodies in the modifiering morphems and supplementary morphemes.
