Chen Kaige, Zhang Yimou, Tian Zhuangzhuang, Wu Zhinu, etc, the fifth generation of directors in China, who had grown up in the Cultural Revolution, and graduated in the early 80's, are the elite of contemporary Chinese movies. By their unique adaptation ways of literature work, they have participated the two decades of cultural development trend since the reform. Manifesting the consistence of the Fifth Generation movies with the cultural and social development big context in China since the Reform and open up new times, I they also manifest their multimodality of movie adaptation, such as the modernization of movie language, movie adaptation concept, adaptation modes, adaptation styles. Especially they made Chinese movies go out of domestic limits, and contributed unprecedented value to the globalization.This dissertation from the perspective of movie adaptation of literature, elaborating in the context, the mode, and the narrative discourse of movie adaptation, etc, discusses the movie adaptation of literature by the Chinese Fifth Generation, with the hope to generalize some rules from the practice of the movie adaptation of literature by the Chinese Fifth Generation, so to help its development. Therefore, the first part of this research mainly is concerned about the analysis of political context, economical context, literature context and movie context in the Fifth Generation movies adaptation, the second part further discuss it, by selecting the three main figures of the Fifth Generation: "reflective type of Chen Kaige", "folk conventions of Zhang Yimou,", "war type of Wu Zhinu". The third part explores the ideology contained some common topics or discourse of the fifth Generation from the movie narrative perspective. It includes "the Cultural Revolution" discourse and " the Assassination of King Ching" discourse. The last part is a generalization and conclusion of the code features of the Fifth Generation manifested as a generation— —explore, adaptation, ideology, globalization.
