The poetry of Sui Dynasty serves as an important transition in the history of Chinese poetry. It carries on the styles of the poetry in Southern and Northern Dynasties, and enlightens the poetic style of Tang Dynasty. However, its remaining poems are relatively fewer due to the fact that Sui Dynasty has lasted only thirty-eight years. Therefore not many people have ever attempted to study the poetry of Sui Dynasty as a whole. In view of this, this article focuses on the analysis of the poets in Sui Dynasty as well as their works, expatiating upon the cultural background of the poetry and reclassifying the exiting poems. This article also attempts to offer discriminations between the authorships of those controversial poems. On the ground of these, the article goes on further analysis of the rules and forms as well as the genres of the poetry themes of Sui Dynasty. It analyses the primary poets and their poetic styles of Sui Dynasty as well. Furthermore, the article elaborates the writing trend in converging the Southern and Northern poetic styles and the transitional character about the poetry of Sui Dynasty, pointing out its achievement and shortages. On the whole, the author attaches great importance to analyzing the works in the article and adopts such research means as textual analysis, induction, summing up, etc. The article also attends to the unification of the macroscopic study and the microcosmic analysis to display the overall styles and features of the poetry of Sui Dynasty objectively.
