The ancient books and the records of Buddhism is the organic part of the materials of Chinese. It occupies an important and original place in the study of the history of Chinese. The systematic and whole study of the history of Chinese should embrace the study of the ancient books and the records of Buddhism. The biography of the Buddhist monks is the most developed of the historical records in the Northern and Southern Dynasties."GaoSengZhuan" which written by HuiJiao in the Liang Dynasty is the earliest representative book retained up till now. To deeply explore and study the phenomena is of great significance and value.The first, the language of the ancient books and the records in the Han and the Northern and Southern Dynasties is the transitional period of the development history of Chinese. It's just like the bridge that links the past and the future. That's to say, so many phenomena were retained and carried forward from XianQin in this period and developed a little. At the same time, so many phenomena of Modern times can be tracked down to this period. "GaoSengZhuan" is espeially like this. For example,"已经,始终,终始" had appeared in "GaoSengZhuan". These words can help to judge the time of their becoming words. Obviously, the study of the language of the Han and the Northern and Southern Dynasties is of great significance and value and should not be neglected.The second, Mr. Wang Li once aired that the basic study of the history of Chinese is not enough and we should study more about dynastic history and special book. The study on the language of the special book is the base of the study of the history of Chinese. Around this period, the study on the language of the special books have occurred, for example, "ShiJing", "ShangShu", "ZuoZhuan", "ShiJi", "HanShu" ,"ShiShuo XinYu","Zhu ZiYu Lei",and the ancient records of Buddhism such as "ZuTangJi", "BiYanLu" and so on. By now, the material on "GaoSengZhuan" is still lacking. The systematic and whole study of this book is a basic work which is important. It's of great importance to the study on the phenomena of the language of the middle ancient times.
