Liu Yuxi And Original Theory Of Buddhist Relations

Liu Yuxi is a famous litterateur and ideologist in the middle period of Tang,while his intercourse,thoughts, poems and proses have affinity with Buddhism.By the means of spaning-subjects, this article wants to discuss the relationship between LiuYuxi's literary inditing,philosophical opinion,intercourse in all his life and Buddhism primarily.The article not only deepens the disquition for Liu Yuxi,but also reviews the process in which the intellectual(士大夫) in the middle period of Tang tried to melt Buddhism into their thought,and the impact of Buddhism to Chinese culture.This text has six chapters and an exordium at the beginning.The exordium briefly introduces Liu Yuxi's life, the general situation of his anthology edition,the research situation in academia from the last century,especially the research to the relationship between Liu Yuxi and Buddhism,and explaines the research idea,method and the questions which this text wants to resolve.Chapter one regards the relationship between Buddhism in middle period of Tang and the political,cultural magistral estates as objects,narrates the background of the relationship between Liu Yuxi and Buddhism from the macroscopical aspect.This chapter includes three parts:emperors in the middle period of Tang and Buddhism, intellectual in the middle period of Tang and Buddhism, the anti-Buddhism trend of thoughts and the conciliation trend of thought to Confucianism and Buddhism.First part analyses the relationship between six emperors which Liu Yuxi had experienced and Buddhism.lt wants to indicate the delicate change that tiptop dominator with Buddhism.Second part analyses the relationship between intellectual and Buddhism in order to indicate that is an universal complexion.Third part analyses the Confucian intellectual's thinking and responses to the great influence of Buddhism.This part includes two aspects: the anti-Buddhism trend of thoughts and the conciliation trend of thought to Confucianism and Buddhism.Chapter two summarizes the relationship between Liu Yuxi and Buddhism from longitudinal and transverse aspects.From longitudinal aspects, Liu Yuxi contacted Jiang'nan Buddhism and monks in his childhood and went deep into Buddhism and inclined to devotion in demoting period.In his late years,Liu Yuxi'official career became successful,his passion with Buddhism weakened,but he still edified himself by Buddhism and Zen.From transverse aspect,there were two traits in relationship between Liu Yuxi and Buddhism.Firstly,he had intercourse with monks of all Buddhist sects,and had profound comprehension to the each theory of them.But his...
