| The modern Chinese literature develops in an open world system and mutual impacts of internal social requirements and foreign effects. It has an indivisible relationship with the trend of world literature, thus it is open in nature. According to this characteristic, the methods of comparative literature have special superiorities to monographic studies on modern Chinese literature. At present, the most works on comparative studies of modern Chinese literature and foreign literature are concerned about western literature. Thus the comparative study on modern Chinese literature and Japanese literature is relatively a weak point It is also a virgin land in certain aspects. The period from the beginning of the 20th century to 1930 was an unusual phase in the development of modern Chinese literature. Discussed the literature of this period, the following facts cannot be neglected, that is, many famous modern writers had the experience of studying in Japan, such as Lu Xun, Guo Moruo, Yu Dafu, Zhou Zuoren, Zhang Ziping, Ouyang Yuqian, Liu Na ou, Xia Yan, Hu Feng, Li Chuli, Li Dazhao, Chen Duxiu, Qian Xuantong, etc They were the mainstay of modern Chinese literature. The New Culture Movement, the Modern Drama Movement and the Left-wing Movement in Art and Literature, the Creative Society and the Neosensualist School, which were separately launched or founded by them, all had specialrelationships with Japanese literature. Starting with the relationships between the above-mentioned modern writers and Japanese literature, this essay tries to discuss the effects between them. Thus it can summarize not only the phylogeny of modern Chinese literature but also the phylogeny of Sino-Japanese modern cultures. This is the main value of the essay. The author's three works, that is, Japan and the Authors of the Modern China, The Author Guo Moruo in Japan and On the Research of the Chinese Literatus Studying in Japan in the Early Twentieth Century, which were all published before 1995, are relatively early ones on studying modern Chinese literature and Japanese literature by using the methods of comparative literature. Up to now, there are few works on this subject, just two ones excepting the above-mentioned three works. One is Wang Xiangyuan's Comparison On Sino-Japanese Modern Literature, which was published in1998. The other is Zhang Fugui and Jin Conglin's Comparative Study on the relationship of Sino-Japanese Modern Literature, which was published in1999. The two works have many valuable viewpoints. Besides the important breakthroughs in establishing the theory of comparative literature, they also constantly bringforth new viewpoints of the methodology of comparative literature. Their research achievements have a function of orientation in the development of comparative literature. Under the guidance of the new theory and methodology, this essay tries to discuss the factors of "Japanese effect" in the development of modern Chinese literature from the angles of "Literary Influence"(Wen Xue Ying Xiang Xue) and "General Literature"(Zong Ti Wen Xue Xue). This is the innovative point of the essay. On the basis of full and accurate materials, the essay discusses the effects of Japanese literature on the literature movements and groups of modern China.
